RIP 4870x2 :(

Well the plot thickens, i took the heatsink off to see if there was a sign of things not touching the sink leading to overheating and look what i found:

Yup, one of the damn memory modules had actually detached itself and was stuck to what i can only describe as a very thin piece of thermal tape.

Im starting to wonder if this card was new or a refurb because everywhere there should have been thicker thermal pads it was littered with this thin crap:

Ended up replacing the tape with pads from an old 3870x2 heatsink i have here. Suppose its possible the ram module was causing a short somehow not allow the card to display a signal. Its possible it might work if that module was tkaen out and i tried it, albeit at the cost of lower vram.

I really can't see this being ram'd now, couple the dodgy ram module with the lack of receipt. And i can't see the oven trick conveniently soldering the ram on perfectly again. :(

Might test it tomorrow with that ram module taken out, right now its back on again though just stuck onto a thermal pad.

Took the ram chip out and still no go, might just try the cooking trick, if i can at least get the ram chip reattached and it gets accepted for rma (unlikely) it'll look a bit better than an obvious loose chip bouncing around in the box.

Power Color aren't actually that bad with dealing with RMAs when you can get hold of the right person. You need to get in touch with somebody called "Jase Lin", he deals with the sales of Power Color graphics card in the UK, if you get your card back together and looking good for an RMA, you'll be able to get the process started by just giving them your serial number on the back of the card (I took photos of mine) and they can find out where it was sold and when, so you won't need your invoice or receipt.

To get hold of Jase Lin, you can email him at this address "[email protected]".

I reckon the RAM chip has detached itself due to extreme heat or something melting the solder, so I'd say it was a manufacturing issue.

Funny thing was earlier i was talking about the heat these thigns produced, just seems scary that an actual ram chip detached because of it
I'll try firing an email to that person as well, thx.

Can only assume its the heat they generate. The back of these cards seems to get stupidly hot even as the system boots up, i can only imagine the heat thats being hamered onto the ram at the back of the card. Its second only in heat generation to the old x1900xtx i had, that thing routinely hit 96c nomatter how many times i redone the thermal compound, could hit 99-100c if i tried to clock it any.

They are hot cards, but mine was under water and never went above high 40's. :(

Looking at your pics those pads could be correct but very dry. This is what mine one looked like once exposed. The pads were very thin.

They actualy felt more like a tape than a type of pad, this pic shows how they should look

Theyre much chunkier than what was on my card, suppose they could have dried out though. If it gets rma approved im giong to have to make a couple of pads out of the large one i have on my 3870x2 hsf, some of them wouldn't peel off without breaking apart. At least that pic gives me a guide as to what should be on the hsf as opposed to what was on it.

Well got a response and sent the serial numbers. Fingers crossed though i really feel if they take it for rma the ram chip will raise an eyebrow and they'll try and claim user damage. Even though it would take some amount of effort to actaully remove the chip in 1 piece like that.
