The Carry-on films star died today aged 98. A very funny man and and wonderful actor in the black and white TV age and more recently the voice of the sorting hat in the Harry Potter movies.

Rest in peace old chap

98 ! Not bad at all from man who generally played lechers and rotters :) By all accounts a really fun character in real life. I was looking at his bio on IMDB and came across this:

David Jason considers him a legend of British comedy.

Can't disagree with that !

Very sad, he slid into the role of the English rake better than any other actor I have come across.

He'll be saying "Well, hello" to the best looking angels, he was irrepressible :)

He had that plummy English voice so rarely heard these days, sadly.

Yep, and not his natural voice. He had lessons when starting out as his real voice was 'estuary English'
Such a brilliant actor.

Great actor.

The last short film I saw him in was a pilot that never went to full air. It was still in the black and white days. Though even then you could tell he was a class act.

It was called "The Suit" in 1969 on the The Galton and Simpson Comedy DVD.

RIP

I remember him from Empire of the Sun, which has always been a favourite of mine, especially the haunting song used.
