My mp3 player died today after 2 and a half years solid abuse. The keypad just stopped responing. Opened it up tried to fix it, but everything is so small and ended up snapping a tiny pin of the connecter that had come loose.

Replacement player recommendations please.

As cheap as possible.

Not bothered what brand however here are some criteria

* Has to have more than 15gb storage.

* Best sound quality as possible.

* Decent battery life.

* As reliable as my old trusty HD3 which cost me £120 when I bought it, so that gives you and idea what I'm looking for.

(on a side note, why the hell haven't mp3 players come down in price? Surely the technology has become cheaper? They even look more expensive nowadays.)

If you like the HD3 - have a look for a 2nd hand HD5 - you will find newer players like iPod and Zen Vision M to have much less sound quality than the sony!

Thing is I desperately need a new one fast, i.e ordered Monday ideally for Tuesday delivery.

Stuck between the Creative Zen M (30gb) and the Ipod (30GB) atm

Seen the for £135 and £150 respectively inc delivery.

Anyone find them cheaper?

Which is the better of the two?

(I can't beleive the price of some of these players, and the new Sony's are max 8GB wtf is that all about?)

Not overly sussed about bass. However I will be using whatever I get with some Shure e2c's which aren't the bassiest of phones, so maybe, argh i dunno what to get!

Dump the Shures... get some Sony EX85's for £27.

I think if you used to sony you will miss it. Why you not got for NWA808 - it may only be 8mb - but its still a lot of music! I can fit 17 albums on my girfriends sony 512mb flash player at atrac3+...

If you must get a harddisc player - get 80gig ipod -

Well i've just popped out and got a stop gap Creative Zen V 4gb for £70.

This will hold me out hopefull until some higher capacity Sony's are available. I REFUSE to pay over £100 for anything less than 20GB, it's just not on £170 for 8GB? **** off lol.

And meh it's not great, all plastic, feels so fragile and it's so small it's fiddly.

Ah well my 21st in October will grab a nice new HDD player then.

That's the thing I can't really afford right now, but need a player to keep me going (I can't live without music).

And all across the highstreet the Vision M wasn't a few quid more unfortunately (£169.99) If it was more like the £95 deal a supermarket were doing (out of stock) or another store doing it for £135 (also out of stock) I would have got it.

However now i'm just gonna stick with this for a while and see what's available when I can afford something in the £150 plus range.

I wouldn't say the Zen V has poor sound quality.

I'm comparing it against my Sony now ( managed to borrow a remote to kind of get some use out of it - still it's pretty crippled by the lack of menu etc)

And it's not that bad, however it doesn't sound as good as the Sony (don't think anything can tbh) it's still not awful.

The Sony sounds normal and balanced whereas the Zen sounds harsher.

ROFL...

It's broken after 1 days use. :o

Well that's me mega ****** off, off to see if I can get a replacement, exchange or whatever. Grrr.

Yea, I'm set on that now, going to wait till it's back in stock at that jersey place as thats the cheapest I can find it.

When you get yours do this....

Get rid of UK firmware and get USA one... you can find instructions how to on epizenter.net Its just a case of entering into service menu... unload firmware and reloading USA one.

Have any sound enharncements off and set custom EQ to...

+12 - 5 -5 -4 -2

This setting sounds extreem, but makes the Vision m sound near to a sony!

Enjoy your new player :)

Mmm, interesting, cheers for that Veg.

Makes me really want to get it fast now, but not paying the high street £170 for it though.

EDIT : Just ordered the Creative Vision M 60GB for £164inc next day delivery

Can't wait now.

Going to be using a mixture of Shure E2C's and AKG K240 Studios (hoping the ZVM can drive them)

Can't afford new earphones atm, I've had the Shures 3 years after spending ages trying to find some I was happy with and not felt the need to change them yet. When they break I'll probably try something else.

BTW I take it the firmware I want is the one called "Creative ZEN Vision:M 60 GB Firmware 1.21.02" when I browse the updates on Creatives site using USA as my locale, or is there another one I can use?

Now this is what I'm talking about.

The Creative Vision M is a beast of a MP3 player. I love it.

Thanks for all the info Veg, I'm rather happy with this now, so glad that cheapo Zen V died on me, otherwise I would never have got this. It's fantastic, sounds better to me than than the Sony, I love the control system and the software is great aswell.

9/10 from me.

It's the new slimmer version aswell. :D

Great to hear the news :) Have you tried it with USA firmware yet - and my EQ settings? USA firmware has better soundquality - and its louder - you can mess with EQ more then.

Id get a remote control for the ZVM too - makes life easier :)

BTW you dont need any software for the ZVM - just drag n drop music into it!
