RIP Steve Irwin

Obviously, so dmpoole is after specifics.

I haven't seen any thus far. Hence my statement that there will be lots of shows about him.

Its probably a bit soon for shows about his life. He hasn't even had this funeral.

Another decent tribute video

think with this its a combo of the music and the pictures that really get you :(

on the "Should he have removed the barbe or not" debate, I don't think he would have had a choice, chances are the Ray would have had it in and out within seconds

Yeah, was a bit much for me to handle that. :(

The barb is left behind when a ray hits you with it. It grows about halfway down the tail and rays dont normally lash out with them to easily as they take time to grow back a new one. Although young rays can be a bit trigger happy sometimes.

just did a little research on stingray barbs.

its not really a sting tbh more like a knife :(

Their stinger is a razor-sharp, barbed or serrated cartilaginous spine which grows from the ray's whip-like tail (like a fingernail). It is coated with a toxic venom. This gives them their common name of stingrays, but the name can also be used to refer to any poisonous ray.

When threatened, their primary reaction is to swim away. However, when they are attacked by predators or stepped on, the barbed stinger in their tail is mechanically whipped up. This attack is normally ineffective against their main predator: sharks.[1] Humans are usually stung in the foot; it is also possible, although less likely, to be stung by brushing against the stinger. Contact with the stinger causes local trauma (from the cut itself), pain and swelling from the venom, and possible infection from parts of the stinger left in the wound. Injuries to humans include, but are not limited to: poisoning, punctures, severed arteries and possible death.

Some reports have claimed that after the incident, Irwin was shown on tape pulling the barb out, before losing consciousness
:(

This was only the third known Australian fatality from a stingray, and the first since 1945.[40] As of 1996, only seventeen worldwide fatalities had been recorded,[41] and it is believed to be the only fatality from a stingray ever captured on film.[42]

Taken from a filthy site some of you might know:

"Steve Irwin video may never been seen by public
Steve Irwin's death Monday came as a shock to many people and since then the world has mourned his loss. He died after a stingray barb punctured his chest during the filming of an underwater documentary off Australia's Queensland coast.

To some, his death came as no surprise given his risky lifestyle and how he seemed to thrive off bringing some of the world's most dangerous animals to people's homes worldwide via television.

Irwin was once questioned about what should happen if he was in a life-threatening situation while filming. Irwin told his camera crew they should continue filming "even if I am eaten by a shark or croc." He said he would be sad if no one got it on tape.

Monday's incident was caught on tape. John Stainton, Irwin's producer and friend, viewed the tape on Irwin's death before handing it over to police. "It's a very hard thing to watch because you're actually witnessing somebody die and it's terrible," Stainton said. He continued to say that the tape "shows that Steve came over the top of the ray and the tail came up and spiked him here [in the chest] and he pulled it out and the next minute he's gone. That was it - the cameraman had to shut down."

It now seems increasingly unlikely footage of the tragic event will ever reach the public's eyes. Stainton told CNN that the tape is presently in police custody and should be destroyed.

"It should be destroyed," Stainton said. "When that (tape) is finally released it will never see the light of day, ever.

"I actually saw it and I don't want to see it again," he said.

Arguably, Steve Irwin's contribution to world was to raise public awareness to many of the world's animals and the struggles they face. He achieved this through sometimes shocking visual media being delivered via television to millions of homes on a weekly basis. Now it seems the final shocking and tragic moments of his life may never be seen."

RIP dude.

Can we please keep this on topic, it's not the place to argue.

Apologies for sending things slightly off topic. :)

Does anyone think that the possibility of a state funeral for Steve is slight overkill?

Nah it wasnt over kill.

The Family turned down the offer though because they said that Steve would rather prefere it to be simple and be treated like an "Average Bloke"

Left my comment, he gave me a respect for animals and how they behave. will be missed dearly, and I think thats going to be a very touching comments book his family will get.

Definately not overkill. He was like Australian royalty over there.

He's a rock hard Aussie so of course he was going to pull it out. Makes you wonder if he would have survived if he left it in and went straight to hospital :/

Apparently the (so I've read) sting is like having boiling water poured all over you. I think under that circumstance one's reaction is to pull it out. :(

Haven't the family decline the offer for a state funeral?
