Hi.
Has anyone got any idea why ripping my CDs takes so long?
Im running Vista64, and only WMP will rip, but it takes about a minute per track.
My old XP system would have the whole CD ripped in far less time!

Ideas?

erm...good question. could be that the encoder in wmp11 is much better? i mean, i could rip at 35x using musicmatch on my old xp1700, i cant get near that using lame on my c2d but then it it does a much better job. its one possibility anyway

Don't use media player, wma sucks. Especially if you want to use the music on devices like phones and personal music players. I use CDex, which will rip into several formats at whatever quality setting you want.

He did not say he was making WMA's, could be MP3's

I just use Nero and make sure I am using the Nero ASPI not Adaptec crap. (Google and read how bad it is esp Nforce chipsets).

Ripping is fast but Encoding can take time depending on format and what bitrate.

I dont think a 64bit OS have anything to do with 3GB of Memory, just because you need one to run over 3GB, does not mean if you have 1-3GB of Memory you should run a 32bit OS.

I would think as WMP is part of the OS it will be real 64bit.

I imagine there are lots of peeps on XP 64 with 1-3GB and do not need 4GB and same for Vista 64 (although Vista is more Ram Hungry).

I dont see this as part of his issue, he should check DMA modes of Optical Drives etc.

I didn't say he had to have a 32 bit operating system if he has less than 4gb. I was just saying there is no need to use 64bit as there is no real performance benefit. He said only WMP rips, is that cos other programs won't run/rip under 64bit??

CDex is my usual method.
Both it and iTunes will think its ripped an entire disk in about 3 seconds, but the files are only a few bytes big.
WMP10 is the only thing ive found that'll do proper rips.

I use Vista64 because i have 4Gb of memory.

Rip them in Nero, you can choose MP3 and any bitrate con or var and then a setting for fast or quality.

At the end of the days its MP3 it can only sound so good.

that's unusual. have you tried EAC for the ripping with LAME?
