My main computer is hardwired into the router, one of my computers is currently running wireless through a Netgear dongle, but I thi nk the signal will be more stable if I hardwire it to the router as well.Is it just a case of running an RJ-45 cable from the router to the computer?

Yep, it's that simple!

Wired is more stable and you'll get a faster connection.
Wireless-N is rated up to 300Mbps - even at home through the walls I get 130Mbps which is better than a 100Mbit cable connection can offer.

More stable I'll agree with. Faster... not always.

Wireless has higher latencies if that matters to you.

130mbps connection speed but I doubt you'll see higher than 9MB/sec, where 100mbit cable can do 10MB+. Wired is always preferred, no matter how 'good' wifi gets imo.

If you happen to own a wifi N router the wired interfaces on it will be Gigabit.... Thus the wired will always be faster.
Wifi is also shared access media whereas wired can be switched thus ontop of that a wired network can have multiple sets of peers communicating simultaniously at wirespeed, Wifi behaves similarly to a Hub and the bandwidth of any particular radio is shared among all connected nodes.
Not to mention encryption/decryption processing at either end of each wireless segment a datagram traverses, adding a driver overhead far greater than that of a wired NIC.

Faster always. Wireless speeds quoted are the total of the two directions but wired speeds are for each direction. So your 130Mbps is really only the equivalent of 65Mbps in wired terms and, as others have said, the overheads on wireless are much higher so you won't get anywhere near that in real terms.

I hadn't expected such a slew of responses to my single post that was related to my personal experience at home.
I appreciate that there are subtle differences between the measurements for wired and wireless speeds in terms of duplex and connection, however I still receive transfer speeds higher on my wireless network than I do on my wired connection. Considering what you've all mentioned it seems likely that rather than the wireless being superior as I assumed I've an issue with the cabled link - time to do some analysis!

For using my laptop in the lounge the wireless will always be faster than wired for me.
But that's only because until the wife grants me permission to pull up some carpet and floorboards the cable connection is only a dream... ;)
