What are the rules when RMA'ing a faulty product in warranty (not with OCUK) are they only obliged to replace like for like or can you have a refund?

I ask because I have a faulty Silverstone PSU, I couldn't be bothered sorting it out at the time so I just stuck it back in it's box and forgot about it, now common sense has given me a clip around the ear and told me I shouldn't just be writing off an £80 PSU so I should do something about it, trouble is I have no use for a like-for-like replacement and I doubt I would get much money for it if I sold a replacement.

So where do I stand?

If it was something small and light that held a bit of value like RAM for instance then I'd just take the replacement and sell it (I did just that with the never ending duff Corsair RAM saga, three sets later I just gave up and ebayed it)

I'm just wondering if it's worth the hassle, becuase I'm already going to be out of pocket with return postage.

How old is the PSU ? If over 6 months old you're responsible for the shipping costs back to the retailer. If it's older 28 days then I believe the retailer has the option to refund/replace/repair, they'll most likely choose the cheapest option which is to return to manufacturer for them to repair/replace.

It's almost 12 months old, but I swapped it out months ago. I was expecting to pay shipping but I'm wondering if it's worth it if they're likely just to replace it seeing as I have no use for it.

Is there a market for these sorts of things and am I likely to get anything for it to make it worth the hassle, this is what I'm struggling to weigh up.

You could ask the retailer to consider 'recission' where they'll offer you a refund minus a deduction for the age/usage of the PSU. I suspect they'll only offer to return the PSU to manufacturer for them to repair/replace. Having a spare PSU is never a bad thing, be silly to just write the psu off. Postage on a PSU I returned for repair/replacement very recently was £14.58 with parcelforce 48hour with extra insurance, the PSU I sent back was around 4.5kg, you could prob find cheaper shipping.

I agree having spare parts is always handy, trouble is I already have a spare PSU, it may not be of the same quality but it's more than capable for stand in duty (Be Quiet!).

I've emailed the retailer so I'll see what they suggest. I do actually have my eye on another Silverstone PSU for a totally different build in the near future, would be good if they could sort something out, although the one I have an eye on is half the price of this duff one.
