howdy. working on friends pc, and i suspected a dead HDD. Just run Powermax which has confirmed this, and given me a diagnostic code.

I know Maxtor have been swollowed by Seagate now - and have checked the drives model number and serial number on their site and it shows as under warranty, which is lovely.

Consdering its an 80gb IDE drive.. i wonder what sized drive will come back :)

anyways - i've never had to RMA a drive to a Manufacturer before, should I just go through their process - what kind of packaging should i use. How quick are maxtor / seagate at RMA?

Thanks in advance :)

Just file an online RMA and you'll then get an email stating everything. You need the send the drive in an anti-stat bag in a padded drive box. Turn around for Seagate can be as quick as 7 working days but can sometimes take around 2 weeks.
