RMx 850w vs Hx1000w for FTW3 Ultra 3080

I am having to retire my TX850w bronze that has been going strong for 10 years now as I will be receiving my EVGA FTW3 3080 soon.

I understand that the FTW3 ultra can spike +100 watts higher than the FE 3080 and I was trying to decide what PSU to buy. I would ideally like to treat the PSU with care, future proof it and have it last another 10 years.

My understanding is that a 850w PSU is sufficient and the online power draw calculators state my total system will draw 680w, which would be 80% of the PSU's max.

I can get an RMx 850w gold for £145 or a HX1000 plat for £165-170.

Will a RMx 850w last 7-10 years safely or would I be pushing it too far to the edge. Is there any benefit to me going for the 1000w PSU or am I just being silly.

I appreciate any and all advice.

Haven't really got advice between them but both will do the job. I was in the same situation and went for the HX1000 a couple of weeks ago. Its a level up in terms of components used and power. Haven't built my rig yet so cant comment on it other than that.

I dont know if some one read this post and went off to buy the hx1000 but the one for £165 is out of stock now and the next cheapest is 185 which makes it a dealbreaker for me.

Have you had a play around with the cables of the hx1000. Some reviews state that they are very stiff and hard to organise nicely into a case, many seem to have bought new sleeved cables which makes the whole thing even more expensive.

Might be a bit late.

But I have a 3080, 5900X running off a rmx850 without issue.

My last psu was a 12 year old hx1000, that ran the 3080 on a 6700k fine. Even at 450w on the gpu in benchmarks.

I have no worries about the new one lasting, based solely on my previous experience with Corsair. Which could be wrong / lucky I know.

The 850 is also a fair bit smaller than my old one, making it easier to route / hide excess cables etc.
I use a sleeved extension kit.

I know you posted this a long time ago, is your experience still the same with this PSU? I am intending to put together an GTX 3080 with an I7 11700K CPU and want to make sure the GPU is running as good as silent even when gaming + while also using power efficiently. I have been waiting for an HX1000 as that is superior to the RM1000x (beyond the Platinum rating). But recently I noticed Corsair came out with an RMx1000 model which now feature smaller improvements, including a better fan and warranty... though your move to an RMX850 makes me wonder.

I think my system will pull around 615-650W in total, maybe more than yours... so while the rmx850 Gold would not struggle at all, I am thinking fans are spinning high (maybe still quite as they generally are well rated for noise), though in particular that the PSU is not super efficient at that point as gold rated.

Given that some of the latest 3080ti's are 400W and 'need' an 850W psu, I would go 1000W to be safe and future-proof, particularly if overclocking.

Fair point, I guess in that case I simply need to decide if to go a Corsair RMx1000 or HX1000 as mention... seems to be £150 vs £175 currently... :) I wish I would have bought a new PC early last year when prices where not as messed up. Could have gotten an HX1000i for a crazy £145.

Although HX is a few years old now I would choose as platinum not gold like RM.
