Road Bike Chain Life

I bought a Defy advance last year sounds like the same chain as mine and I've done around 1200 miles so far with no signs of the chain stretching.

My biggest problem is the gritty sounding freewheel, Gah.

Maybe chains supplied with new bikes in the last year are made of cheese?

With a tape measure, the original chain for my new bike last year appeared to need replacing after 350 miles maximum, despite regular lube with Prolink Progold and bimonthly cleaning with Muc Off cleaner and cleaning tool.

Did buy a PX chain wear tool set month, still yet to measure the old chain and the one that replaced it!

Probably depends on the chain gauge, I bet 1/8" single speed last far longer than 11 speed derailluer chains.

Well the chain on my Giant Defy has just passed 10,000 miles and that's commuting in all weathers. It is though only 8 speed so probably twice as much metal as an 11 speed chain!

what do you mean by "last" aka did not split in two pieces? or have you actually dropped a chain wear tool and checked for wear? ;)

because if you simply go by "it's in one piece" then it'll last years and years but during that time it'll eat away at your chain ring and your cassette so it'll cost more to replace it all rather than just maintain your chain.

I've not checked for wear but I'm sure it has. It still shifts fine and doesn't slip. The groupset is 2300 so my plan is to ride it into the ground then replace the whole lot. (Will probably end up buying a new bike first though:D )

Just done a rough calculation and rounded down the way as I thought my chain sounded a bit sketch on my Kickr.... Yeah so my chain has done at least 5500 miles. Probably a good bit more if I work it out properly.

This is the 105 chain I fitted with touch when we got to Fuerteventura in Feb 2016 and I took out 1 or 2 links more than I should have I think? Something like that anyway, but remember thinking it was a bit too short and I would get a new one as soon as we got back to Scotland but it was fine for the training trip.....

I'll replace it today I suppose as think it perhaps deserves it :)
