Hi all,

I want a good road / racing bike for my daily commute (13 miles each way.)

Therefore it should be as light as possible, what can you recommend for a £600 budget?

Cheers,

Si

Bianchi's are nice, but you're paying for the name. You can buy a bike with better components for a cheaper price from a lesser brand, and it'll be just as good.

If this bike is for work use, I'd buy a roadie with fittings for full-length mudguards. Panniers are great also (do you really want to ride to work in your work clothes??) so you can store work clothes in panniers, but then looking at tourers.

Friend of mine has a Focus, he's been very pleased with it. If you're buying a bike to commute on, get one that can fit mudguards.

cool i like these recommendations :D

Will i notice a good difference between a mountain bike with road tyres and a racing / road bike?

Mountain bike will still be heavier, if you don't actually want a mountain bike and do just want something for commuting then buy for your needs.

well ive already got a mountain bike you see- gt aggressor with heavy marzocchi forks, and some mavic 721 wheels with thin michelin tyres.

I love my Bianchi and would definitely recommend them to any one looking for a road bike. How hilly is your commute? If it isn't too bad then go for a compact chainset.
As long as you pick something with good components then you can't really go (far) wrong. If you have a browse around the Evans site then they have a lot of last years bike in their sale section.
Personally I would buy either a Trek, Specialized, Bianchi or Cannondale.

OT: I've ordered some new cycling shoes from Chain Reaction this week for Saturday delivery and they've not been dispatched yet.

If they don't come tomorrow I'll be very unimpressed.

Don't worry, there are many occasions when I receieve the item while their system is still saying processing. Their system can be slow sometimes.

I wish I can have a road bike for commuting instead of using the mountain bike.... Simply don't have enough room to keep 2 bikes inside. I'm quite worry my mountain bike getting stolen in Uni. A cheap SS road bike will be ideal for my commute....

If your primary use of a new bike will be commuting, you would be better off having full length mudguards and a rack with a pannier bag or two to lug your change of clothes and lunch box ect to work in.

Just last week a bought a bike for that purpose but on a higher budget and with a few other requirements in mind. When I began though, I was looking at the Bianchi Cameleonte III, which should fall within your budget. It has good quality components for your purposes that will wear well and be more cost effective to replace. The cheaper Cameleonte II with Shimano sora and 2200 parts, in particular the chain and cassette; are not terribly robust or pleasent to use.

The best value for money at your price point and assuming the requirements of mudguards and panniers is going to be a flat bar road bike 9 times out of 10.

If you don't lug much kit to work and your not bothered about getting mucky on the wet weather days, then you might find you'll enjoy the slightly sportier feel of a racing bike if you don't mind risking a sweaty back through wearing a ruck sack.
