Road cycling....

I think an important point is the fact that (afaik) most hospital admissions for bike related accidents don't involve a car at all.

I think the studies that have been done, (and much more needs to be) and come out as inconclusive about the effects of helmets on road cyclists take this into account.

More here on the CTCYorkshireHumber site. Whilst it's and article against compulsory use of helmets the stats are still the same.

Well yesterday I came off my bike and hit my head off the pavement, helmet took the force (it's broken) and if anyone tells me that it wouldn't make much of a difference, I'd think they're crazy personally.

Bike was fine thankfully.

No doubt someone'll be along to say "You might not have hit your head at all if you weren't wearing a helmet", my favourite anti-helmet nonsense ;)

I went over my handlebars head first and there is no doubt afterwards it made what could have been a bad injury a few scratches.

How and why did you fall off?

Was on a cycle path, there was a hump on the path and went through it at about 25mph according to my odometer reading from moments ago. Went flying over handlebars, bike was absolutely fine apart from a reflector on the pedal coming off.

Guy who saw it next to me stood in shock for a few minutes

Will be writing a note to Ealing Council about it, they really ought to fix it...an old woman who lived next to it came out and said a few people come off on it.

If its a short trip and not via main roads, i.e by a cycle path, then i will probably give the helmet a miss, but then at the same time, if will not be ombing it and will be taking extra care. All other times, the weekend ride or the commute, the helemet will be with me. There is no chance that I am going to ride down the A4 without a helemt on.

I wear a **** pot of kieranv on here when up at glentress but don't when I'm out and about on the other bike. I do want to get my own full face and decent xc helmet though.

I've crashed quite a lot in some forrest and generally just have a sore leg, landed on the wrong side of the road after crashing flat out once which resulted in a really sore pelvis for days! Oh and broke my foot in 4 places doing a crap drop! :(

I'm not trying to troll but I have never been in a situation where I have been going 25mph and not looking at where I am going or been ready for such things. If I did feel that such things might occur, then I would wear a helmet as I sometimes do. (excluing off road where I always wear a helmet)

That was already in the CTCYorkshireHumber link above :D along with loads of data about glancing blows and transfer of impact forces to less protected arts of the head and generation of rotational forces.
