Seriously, how great are our road signs?

I know there are the odd occasions when the signage is rubbish but on the whole, is it me or do our signs rock? All totally standardised, all over the country, all easy to read, etc etc.

Go to America and directions are a nightmare.

This is now the official UK roadsign appreciation thread.

Sometimes they can be rubbish.

It really annoys me when they put them right at the junction, so u drive passed reading it then realise u needed the juntion u just passed lol.

Much better than some of the autoroutes on the continent. You're hammering along and see the sign for the next exit, two seconds later and the exit is next to you.

I Agree our road signs are very good with the exception of the ones with enough of the jungle in front you would need a chainsaw to get through to read it :D

I love British road signs. One of my personal favourites of the UK road networks, that and the layout of the roads themselves.

As soon as you hit the Republic of Ireland and Dublin especially, the road network becomes a joke!

God Save The Queen!!

I've often thought this too, but never thought to post it to a forum...

still, yes, three cheers for road signs, and that.

Yeah we have pretty good road signs. Only thing which annoys the hell out of me is when you get signs saying to go down a road, then all the signs just disappear and you're left wondering where to go next!

And nothing more annoying when there are hundreds of lorries on the motorway and they're blocking every damn sign!

our signs are good, but they are the same as USA ones imo, I didn't find anything bad about them.

Everywhere you went in the USA they had different and totally random signs. It was all a mess.

Come to think of it, I remember getting awesomely confused by the overhead signs, as it kept implying that you had to be in a specific lane for a specific exit, although I got used to it after a couple of mistakes.

I also had a laptop loaded with Autoroute for all my guidance needs (aided by my bro) which helped a lot, much easier than a paper map.

Driving there with a map is a piece of cake, as all roads have signs stating what the road is at all intersections at easy to see places, unlike here.

and GOD PRAISE turn right on red!

Something very homely and calm about British road signs. Perhaps because they arent capitalised.

I remember driving to France once...was glad to get home in the evening to British roadsigns gently directing me to the M2 and home :D

Seriously, at 23:48 on a wednesday night this is what your thinking about? :D

You need to go out more - on second thoughts, don't - the signs have already got to you! ;) :D

American road signs are not bad, its that your not used to them, my American relatives cannot understand our road system at all!

Anyone watch "The Secret Life of Motorways" on Tuesday? They interviewed the two people who designed the original motorway signs, which were exactly the same design as those used now.
