Hi all,

Looking for some roads to on in scotland, prefferably with awesome scenery/ I have had a look on PH and google and most are recommending a route up near glencoe and fort augustus. I have always wanted to go up that far in the car.

Can anyone recommend a good route or roads near there and what would be super awersome is a router on googlemaps starting from somewhere near fife So I can plot it all into a Tom tom.
Would Ideally like to make it a day trip but if neccesary a 2 day jaunt with somewhere to stay overnight would be great.

Im useless as this so im countin on you lot lol :p

I've onde a fair bit of hooning round Dumfries when we go camping. Frankly, there's on rule in Scotland, if a road looks interesting, take it! Never remember where we went and what route, when the fuel gauge was looking light, we'd stop figure out where we were then head back via the nearest settlement for fuel.

Good times, not going this year though :( It's always reccomended to go towards the coast after a good drive inland and see if you can time it with sunset. I obviously wouldn't play games with fuel the further north you go mind!

yeh I have made a few trips around pershire and up the east cost just doing the drive but you always know where you are generally. Want to do the west and highlands and always wanted to up by glencoe etc. Will just be me and a few mates so not botherd how long it takes the both dont have jobs and im off till the 21st

The routes I have made so far ended up being rubbish :(

If you can get onto the A82 and head up past Glencoe and towards Fort William, that has some amazing scenery, and it's a nice road to drive as well.

Done scotland many many times. My advice is stick to the west coast and ensure you go at least as far Fort William or further North. The general rule is that the roads get better the further NW you go.

Highlights for me would be....

* Leaving the motorway and going up through glencoe past the green welly shop (last kinda cafe until Fort William) and over Glen Coe and then down into Fort William. Some nice pubs/restaurants in Fort William and it makes a good "southern" base.

* The day after blasting.... and I do mean blasting :) upto the commando memorial and over the top onto the A87 Kyle of Lochalsh road heading for the Isle of Skye. Your talking 100mph average speeds here, at least on a bike. One of the most thrilling drives/rides you'll do. Great visibility, open, constant radius corners with no surprises. Bliss. Before you get to Skye, turn off and do lunch in Plockton.

* The road past plockton upto Ullapool is great also. Not as good as the A87 but Ullapool itself is a great destination with some fantastic roads both north, south and east of it.

* One not to miss the road from Ullapool back down south around the coast literally hugging the coast all the way through Gairloch and eventually to the small town of Applecross for lunch (great seafood fyi) and then over the Bealach-na-Bar (iirc "Pass of the Cattle") which I believe is the highest road in the UK and is pretty spectacular. Drops you down back into Loch Carron (kinda opposite Plockton) and then back to Fort Wiliam.

Anyhow theres some tips for ya. If you follow that itinerary you wont go far wrong :)

That sounds awesome bud, now just to plot that into the map and satnav. So starting by traveling upto glencoe and then doing that route is it posible in 1 day or shall we need a place to stay?

I guess it depends on where your coming from :p

So i'm guessing scotland in your sig, so i'd go right upto Ullapool going from Fort William, across the A87 as described, lunch in Plockton and get into Ullapool around 4pm ish. Good B&B in Ullapool is Eilean Donan Guest House (01854612524). Next day, go south via Gairloch and Applecross for lunch. Get into Fort William around 4ish, and either stay (Guisachan House 01397703797) the night or home.

Consider on the way back down, Take the A828 at the Ballachullish roundabout (go under the bridge) and follow that road down to Connel (lovely scenery and nice corners - don't take the Creran bridge, keep going round the loch), then east bound on the A85 back to Tyndrum (green welly stop) From Dalmally to Tyndrum, some nice undulating high visiblity fairly new road.

applecross pass or whatever its called looks great. on the west coast.

never been, and realllllllly want to.

I did a road trip to Scotland a few months ago.

A good trip is from Inverness, down the side of Loch Ness on the A82, through Fort William, eventually ending up at the southern end by Ben Nevis. The road back through the Glencoe mountains is simply stunning. The A85 past Loch Earn was really beautiful at sunset.

I'll post a few pics when I get back from work.

Just watch out for the under cover Police cars and camera vans as this year they are heavily policing those roads up north. My friends are doing a similair route in a couple of weeks staying overnight in Fort William however I can't make it this time :(

Right... a few pics to wet your appetite:

Would definitely go again! Although I had a lowly Mondeo diesel, it was the first driving holiday I've ever been on. Hope you enjoy Scotland as much as I did!
