Road Tripping in the USA!

Why anyone would want to fly when they can drive and find all sorts of scenery and treasures is beyond me.

Because most of these route suggestions major on the central states which are flat and avoid the really very scenic bits because they spend all their time driving through features prairies :p

I'd still go for those, meet some right characters.

Although doing a few thousand miles through the like of Montana and Kansas isn't quite the same as up the west coast! hah.

Thinking of heading out to Texas for the GP in October and then week and a bit either side for just under 3 weeks total. Come up with this tentative route so far.

Atlanta
New Orleans
Houston
Austin
Dallas
Oklahoma
Memphis
Nashville
Atlanta

Obviously with some stops in between these places. Critique, suggestions etc all welcome.

Thanks

Wasn't a huge fan of Houston myself Paul.

Having done all of those places though and looking to be back in Nashville in Oct/Nov myself make sure that's on the list. New Orleans, Austin, Dallas also get a huge thumbs up!

I've heard this about Houston, would possibly be just a one nighter, but could skip and head straight to Austin! Will message you on whatsapp tomorrow as my phone is playing up.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, the big guy is 6 ft 4 and about 80% leg, so I imagine it would be complete hell for him stuck in the back. Going to try and get him to see sense and we'll rent something else - I was thinking a Dodge Charger might actually fit the bill but my google skills don't reveal if rental companies still do these. The most sensible option would be some kind of SUV, but I can see that being incredibly dull.

I suppose we could fly after we've done Dallas, but then we want to do the Grand Canyon, and we're going to swing past Vegas and do Death Valley, and there are a few other bits along the way including meeting up with a friend in New Mexico, so it probably makes more sense to just stick to the road. I realise that once we get out of Dallas the drive isn't going to be particularly inspiring for about 1000 miles, but we can live with that.

I've done in excess of 60,000 miles over there now in several trips, up to 42 states. I still want to go back and do more!!

I'm only suggesting flying across the middle states which are just one long road with nothing around.

IMO, he'd be much better off flying to Vegas, hiring a car there and spending the extra few days driving to better places around there - Yosemite, Death Valley, etc.

I've not checked the schedule, but how about a NASCAR race?

I went to one last May and got a close a NASCAR before I was told to move on.

They did do good bbq!

Memphis - if you go, make sure to go to Rendezvous and get some ribs! http://hogsfly.com/

Everyone I know from Memphis prefer Central BBQ to Rendezvous. Rendezvous is just more famous. I've only ever been to Central BBQ but it was pretty damn good.

Try and work Chattanooga into your trip from Nashville to Atlanta. Ruby falls and Rock City are pretty amazing. You can see 5 states from one viewing location in Rock City. There's also a really good aquarium there if you're into that stuff.

The weather around there in October could be a bit hit and miss so Rock City might not be great. If it's a clear day though, definitely recommend it.

Thanks. I had chattanooga as a stop. But will look at the others too.

Not the bit I drove! But given it's size I agree!

Out of interest which part? We drove N-S from Sweetgrass (Canadian border) to Yellowstone, and then up to Glacier and pretty much the entire drive was stunning. One of the big plusses was the variety of terrain, everything from flat plains with hills in the distance, to narrow canyons and mountains.

I presume the east?

Hi guys. After a little bit of advice please. We may have a short trip in the Summer to San Francisco to see family (they're based near Sacramento) and we're hoping to have some time to see a little of Northern California. Trip will be around 12 nights in total as detailed below (though we can be flexible):

Day 1-4: Staying with family in Sacramento
Day 5 ?
Day 6 ?
Day 7 ?
Day 8 ?
Day 9-12 : San Francisco

Looking for some ideas of what to do and we thought grab a hire car and head into Yosemite area for three or four days. (Probably 4 days). Any recommendations of routes or must see things/where to stay etc?

We're hoping to do a proper Southern California road trip in a couple of years (LA, San Diego, Death Valley, Vegas etc) so would be nice to see a little of the North now then we can avoid that in our itinerary next time. Travelling around mid May or early June (tbc)

Thanks

You could look at heading north on the PCH and exploring the quieter areas north of SF. A bit of the beaten track, but possibly worth it for that alone. :)

Why not drive a NASCAR instead?

PS. Jack Daniels fan? Go check out Lynchburg, TN - not much else there though :)
