Road Tripping in the USA!

Looking at hiring a car in 10 days or so. heading to Vegas with the wife, we're planning on going from the strip, up to the canyon (south rim). Looking to hire a mustang convertible.

Which places would people recommend to hire these from? What's the rough prices too? I know Fox went in 2011, so 2 1/2 years ago, wondering if prices are still the same. It would just be a day hire :)

Cheers :)

This is a really bad idea.

Firstly a one day rental is proportionately very expensive - on a daily rate basis it's far more expensive to rent for one day than it is for more.

Secondly the South Rim of the Grand Canyon is not a day trip from Vegas really - it's a very long way, perhaps 5 hours+ each way. More if you stop off at somewhere like the Hoover dam on the way. It's also not really a Mustang Convertible drive - it's highway driving in 90c+ heat. The roof will be closed for most of your rental.

People underestimate just how far the Grand Canyon is from Vegas.

I suggest you book a tour with a flight from North Las Vegas Airport. This is what I did - got there for 10am, got on the plane, flew to the Canyon, had some time at various viewpoints, flew back, was on the strip again for 3pm. Much better.

Then if you MUST hire a Mustang Cabrio for one day spend it driving to Hoover Dam and around Vegas etc, more relaxed and you'll enjoy the car more.

Helicopters are not permitted to land in the Grand Canyon - the ones that do are actually taking you to 'Grand Canyon West' which isn't the actual Grand Canyon, its a side canyon off the main GC.

Thanks Fox et all;

Do you have any details on the tour you did Fox?

I had a look into a few type of tours (enough to know about the difference between West and South rim!). But really fancied the drive in a 'stang :)

Do you have the budget to upgrade to a Corvette? They are far better cars! I hate driving the V6 Mustangs.

Mine was with Vision Air. Can't remember who I booked with though.

Thanks, I'll give it a looksy :)

Potentially yes, there's no real budget as such, as long as I feel it's an acceptable price to pay for a days worth of hire :)

Didn't end up getting a car! Couple who we went with picked up a 'vette and did the West side of the canyon... I know I know, that's why we didn't go :D

We were booked into do a tour by helicopter and a horse ride down into the canyon, but cancelled and ended up drinking and meeting Randy Couture in a bar, on his 50th. So a decent outcome in the end :D

Will definitely be going back at some point, Vegas is immense. I'd recommend going to see Absinthe too - what a show :)

Again appreciate the advice Fox et all. :)

That is one of the best Vegas stories I have heard in a while! Did you laugh at him for his stupidity of late?

I think I've said this before but I am continually amazed at how many people fall for this.

How big is the fake canyon compared to the real one?

Just in case anyone is thinking about it I did mine with Vision Air (both times I have been actually) booking through http://www.grandcanyontourcompany.com/. Think I remember Rotty suggesting them years back & they were pretty spot on. Flew to the South Rim in an 18 seater high winged plan, then a bus tour to a couple of stops where you get to spend a couple of hours pottering around & then fly back with a view of the Hoover Dam on route :)

Doing the helicopter ride OVER the Canyon is a must for this once in a lifetime experience.

I did it with Papillon who were great, but we did have to get to boulder airport for the flight to the S. Rim (were picked up from hotel in nice minibus). The company that FOX went with would be a better choice as he went from a North Vegas airport, a good deal closer than Boulder.

Want to go back now, now NOW!!! Might be sooner than I think as a great mate just moved to Riverside with his American wife after a number of years in the Caymans. Perfect excuse for a casual road trip to the West Coast :D

Haha no, but I did laugh at him on a mechanical bull! He lasted longer than I did though :(

Was so chuffed that I had my picture with him!

We were in this bar (Gillys bar I think actually) right by the Pirate Ships, sat on a "stool" which was actually a saddle. Just having a drink after we've walked a bit down the strip to go to the venetian, after deciding that horse riding into the canyon was a bit stupid as I've never been on a horse! Got chatting to the barman who mentioned the place will be super busy tonight, I asked him why and he said Randy had booked half the place for his 50th. Told the missus I'm not moving now and that she'll have to put up with me sitting here till I get a picture.

She went and got changed, I sat there like a gimp, got to meet him and drank a shot with him. Fell of a mechanical bull (wife lasted the whole minute....) and got smashed. A few other fighters were there too, no one of note really, but every where you looked there was cauliflower ears :D

West Coast USA - Road Trip

Hi,

The wife and I have booked our flights for next May in to San Fran and out from Vegas over two weeks.

We are roughly thinking San Fran > Yosemite > Coast Line down to LA > San Diego (Might pop across the border into Mexico for a night) > Then onto Vegas (Maybe via Death Valley)

Does anyone have any suggestions along this route that we should plan in? I want to visit Laguna Seca and ideally book some track time much like the experience days at Silverstone but can't find any info on their site.

Cheers
