Road Tripping in the USA!

I would consider scrubbing the drive to the Grand Canyon - it's not bad but it's nothing you won't already have seen on your drive up to that point. You can fly from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon in 40 minutes and tour the decent vantage points at the South Rim. This will free up more time for other things and perhaps make it feel like a bit less driving, too.

I think we paid about £120ish each for the tour. Left Grand Canyon North airport at 11am, arrived back at 3pm.

If he is going to Page/Monument Valley etc. then the GC is pretty much on the drive back.

Some more photos to whet your appetite:

The hike to Angels Landing in Zion:

And one for Fox, my epic Chevy Impala! :D :

Nice! You didn't catch Delicate Arch at sunset? Tell me you saw some of them at sunset? :D

I should have been renting another Mustang Convertible in July, but USCarHire screwed up (terrible customer service!) and I ended up with this...

You won't get a Sebring because they don't make them anymore. It's the 200 now.

Same thing though, just the newer model

And there's always a possibility you could turn up at the airport and all the mustangs are gone. I know you've said drive to another collection point and see if they can swap it. Tried that too and they also had no mustangs.

Not to say you will have the same as its luck of the draw. But i had no luck the last holiday we had.

Expedia will do a midsize suv ford escape, £512 for 21 days (august) with Alamo. £280 cheaper than a luxury car for the same period. We will go for this unless a better deal comes up before the weekend.

We'd only planned a day for Arches but ended up doing almost 2 full days there. Moab is awesome.
I fully agree - the wife and I did exactly the same. Arches stretched into an additional day plus a half days canyon ride just outside Moab itself... absolutely stunning! :)

That's a really crap class, the Escape is sold here in the UK as the Ford Kuga. This rental class contains some real junk, I had this class for a short one way rental and got a Chevrolet Captiva, a car so bad you can buy it brand new here in the UK for just 12k.

I would pick a fullsize sedan over this class for sure.

I did some rafting down the Colorado and a Hummer tour on Hells Revenge. Loads of fun. If you're over 25, or have a fair bit of cash handy, I highly recommend renting a Wrangler to do some 4x4 trails yourself. :D

Scenic byway 128 is a great drive as well.

Just looked at the impala the 2014 one looks good £505 with Alamo but does not cover excess insurance. Would like to have paid everything upfront as we do not want to be pressured by the desk after a long flight and before driving out od LA at 9 in the evening.

Book it with Alamo through somebody like netflights.com and it will be fully inclusive.

For my trip netflights are cheapest as they were last year.

So we've agreed on a destination, just need to work out a route. Going to fly into and out of Boston in September for 2-3 weeks. Not quite the Colorado trip I wanted but hey, it's still a US road trip :p

So far the only solid 'must do' things are Mount Washington, Toronto and Niagra Falls. I'd like to try and get as far over as Chicago, anyone else done a similar route and what was great/not so great/unmissable/missable etc?

Really, so nobody has done this area before?!

We have done Toronto and Niagara but that was 24 years ago so not very up to date! We followed the Saint Lawrence up as far as Newfoundland so the other direction.

I had a holiday to canada when I was younger. But that was confined to Ottawa , Montreal and Toronto.

The CN tower is worth a visit if you plan on going to Toronto. We also watched a baseball game at the Blue Jays stadium which was fun. It really was a great atmosphere. There's some nice places in downtown Toronto. Definitely worth a visit and your GF will appreciate the Eaton Centre and you might like the distillery district.

Didn't reply as wasn't sure if you were planning on doing anything in canada apart from Niagra

You have to visit Plymouth rock surely :D About a 45 minute drive south of Boston.

Can't really help much, when I went to Boston we drove south to New York and stopped off at a few of the coastal towns on the way (Plymouth ofc). Funny all the town names along there, the settlers weren't particularly inventive it has to be said :p

I have looked into doing that sort of area, but not done it.

Up towards Bar Harbour and Arcadia National park looked good.

Depending on how far you are going you have the cabot trail in Nova Scotia (14hrs from Boston to the northernmost point and 13hrs from Quebec City), supposed to be one of the worlds most scenic roads.

You also have the Green mountains and Lake Placid, Ben and Jerry's in Vermont, it's sits in a scenic area even if you aren't interested in the tour.

Nice! If (hopefully read as 'when') we go back I'll try and get some of those ticked off. :)

Not really sure what I'm planning on, she's interested in seeing more of Canada after last year so I'll need to spend at least 3-4 days there I'd imagine. What is there around that won't seem dull after the awesomeness of British Columbia?

This sounds cool, I'll get googling.

It seems that I have a choice to make - assuming we must include Niagra, Toronto and Mount Washington, I can either cover up to and including Nova Scotia or instead go the other way and take in Chicago etc. Hmmm... thoughts?
