Road Tripping in the USA!

How long is the holiday? We managed 2.5 weeks with large holdalls, the type big enough to have wheels. It's the fact its squishy that makes the difference.

This!

The Sebring covertible was crap and had zero space in the boot with the roof down, but the Mustang on the other hand had loads.

We managed to fit our main 2 holdalls in the boot with the roof down, some shopping and a crate of corona. General carry on luggage went on the back seats.

God I miss that trip!

Top tip : If you can't fit your stuff in two large holdalls, you're taking too much stuff, regardless of trip length.

Take enough for a 2 week trip and take an hour out of your month-long trip to visit a laundry mid-way :p

This is a good point I don't think I've seen made before. We usually do a full load of washing at least once per trip, almost every hotel you stay in will have laundry facilities - all done for you if you are staying somewhere posh, self service facilities if you are not.

In all honesty, with prices being that they are in the USA, surely you're better off, coming with as little as possible in terms of clothing, and buying everything out here in the outlet stores anyway ?

Of course we are planning that already :)

Try saying that to a woman...they will come with loads and buy loads more!!

So you guys reckon a holdall instead of say a large case might do the trick? At least I can go out and get a holdall / borrow one.

Sitting in San Francisco airport awaiting a flight home after a full on week of work/play hard. Only I can get a cold in this weather :(

Anyone give me an absolute ball park figure for what 3 weeks would cost me in California/Vegas for me and the Mrs.

Was set on doing Cambodia/Vietnam/Malaysia next year as it would be very cheap once over there but a friend has suggested she wants to do Vegas for her 30th so trying to suss out how long 3 weeks over that neck of the woods would set me back. It's going to be expensive, but im not sure how much!

We'll probably be a week in Vegas, then split the rest of time between California (LA and San Diego) and probably a few days down in Tijuana.

Well you don't HAVE to go for 3 weeks, that's a fairly extravagant amount of time to go to a place like that, its obviously going to cost more. You don't need 3 weeks especially if you were going to waste a whole week in Vegas :p

Sod that then! South East Asia it is!

Would south Asia be any less ?

You can get hotels for less than $50 a night if you don't mind skimping it. Actually in Vegas, you may even get a 4star for that kind of price ! . And food well you can eat out for as little as $5 a head, as long as you don't mind fast food.

I'm nearly all ready for my trip, I've still got a final few bits to get (GoPro camera, bags and US maps for my TomTom) but apart from that everything has been booked for a while.

To answer Rossi's question - I'm going in August so more expensive due to school holidays but flights (£1.1k~), hotels (£1.5k~), car rental (£600~) comes in at £3.2k for 2 people for 3 weeks and the rest (spending money, food, drink etc...) is up to you.

Tbh I wouldnt bother getting a Gopro camera Peerzy. I used one last year and I don't even think I've bothered to watch the footage. I also spent too much time faffing around with it and starting it/stopping it/whatever when I should have been enjoying the scenery. It's the latest fad, you don't really need a GoPro on holiday.

Don't know how i've only just found this thread!

Did this kind of trip when i was 22 in a Hyundai Elantra - me and a friend (girl). Decent ride.. still cost a bomb though because of my age! I did all the driving and did;

SF > Monterey > Santa Barbara > LA > Vegas - 16 days. Best time of my life.

Now i'm 25.. time to do it all over again.. but better! Going with my best mate for 21 days.

LA > Newport beach > Santa Barbara > Monterey > Santa Cruz > SF > Yosemite > Bishop > DV/LV > LA to drop the car off and fly back.

August time - so pretty expensive. Costs per person are:

Flight (virgin): £878
Hotels (20 nights): £892
Mustang Convertible (Hertz - exact model): £520
Estimated gas (trip is about 1400miles, estimated 2200miles): £120

£2400 per person for 3 weeks loving California - pretty good! Planning to do a lot of spending while we're there - big foodies (got a custom google map with loads of eateries on there from where i found last time, man vs food places, diners drive ins and dives places etc.) and never shop through the year so always like doing a one-off massive clothes/gadgets shop.

Extra curricular activities include Grand Canyon helicopter + bus tour which is £200 each. Shoot some guns for an hour in vegas: £100. Tickets to a vegas show (Absinthe or Cirque du soleil): ~£100.

It all works out as a big chunk of money if you really go all out.. but isn't that what a holiday like this is for? Highly recommend!
