Road Tripping in the USA!

I was thinking when I'm there in September, I'll bite the bullet and buy some sort of MiFi dongle + PAYG simcard with unlimited data/calls. Any recommendations? I have a Xperia Z5 (E6653) I could use as a hotspot if im not mistaken, instead of the dongle and save some cash that way?

T-Mobile out there have a pretty good PAYG offering, though it's only available in Walmart or online (though I think you can order it to a T-Mobile store?). Seems to be $30 for a month of unlimited (up to) 4G data, unlimited texts and 100 minutes.

Anybody used this by any chance?

You just need to get hold of a T-Mobile SIM and activate it online on the $30 plan. It's unlimited data but you get 5GB of high speed and after that it's throttled to 128kbps for the rest of the month.

Just be aware that T-Mobile's coverage is great in big cities and reasonable on interstates but in rural areas (and inside buildings unless your phone has band 12 LTE support) it can be a bit hit and miss. They use roaming on AT&T to fill in the gaps but you can't roam with prepaid.

Is that with the roof down though?

If not you might as well hire a coupe :p

I might be incorrect but from what I remember the roof space in the convertible doesn't change when you put the roof down?

can fit cases in a mustang

but not a camero which we got as they had no mustangs left.

meant we had a convertible we couldn't put the roof down on.

Just be careful with what phone you have and what networks it can take.
A T-Mobile SIM wouldn't work in my UK iPhone 6, whereas AT&T would. I think its something to do with UK vs US frequencies that the networks use.

When I first moved here I used my UK iPhone 6 with T-Mobile with no problems. It doesn't support Band 12 LTE but it's not necessary - you still get access to Band 2 and 4 LTE.

Recent iPhones have very wide support for worldwide networks and an iPhone 6 sold in the UK supports all the bands a US iPhone 6 supports plus a few more. The UK iPhone 6S is the same model as T-Mobile, Verizon and Sprint sell here in the US and will also work fine on AT&T (it's missing Band 30 LTE but it's not really being used by AT&T yet).

Hmm how strange! I asked to try a sim in store and just constantly came up with no service.
Maybe just ignore my previous post then!

Right so I'm going in Mid October October. Wuld the going to sun road in Glacier still be open?
Also does anyoone know where you can rent a Mustang GT from in Los Angeles? I rented an Ecoboost last year and the engine in that was gutless.

You'll have to specifically look to rent a Mustang GT and not a car class. I had a brief look at this a while ago and decided it wasn't even remotely worth it as a GT was about double the cost of a normal Mustang.

You will get properly ripped off opting specifically for a GT sadly. They cost almost no more new yet loads more to rent.

When I last looked I think a Mustang or equivalent was £650 for 3 weeks and a GT was around £1500.

I think Hertz are the only rental company where you can book the "exact model" and go for a Mustang GT. Like Fox says, it costs a lot.

When we did the same with Camaro SS they still tried to fob us off with a V6. We had to push hard and ended up with a convertible with sat nav for no extra charge.

Hi All,

I'm going Florida soon and I know I will be using a few tolls. Alamo said they use a pay by plate and charge at the end of the rental to my credit card. Has anyone used this before or have any suggestions? I was told not to use it and pay cash as it would be cheaper?

Yea, there is a convenience fee which makes it more expensive than just chucking cash in the bucket at the toll.

Some of the Florida tolls are ridiculous - less than a dollar a time.

Quick tip that I just started doing on my current roadtrip.

Take a photo of your hire car's number plate and use it as the lock screen on your phone.

Yes, I know it's on the key ring, but it may not be legible or your (my) eyesight is too poor to read it.
