Road Tripping in the USA!

Just got an email that Road to the Sun has now opened. Though people may be interested to know.

May pop down for a weekend in the near future and see what the fuss is about as we missed it last weekend.

Rwhc, each to their own as you say. It's like cruises. I never understand how people can see enough in just a few hours at each location to make the trip. As much as I like travelling from place to place I like to spend enough time to do everything, which can be a long time. The travelling from place to place usually takes twice as long as well because we keep stopping at interesting bits.

Grand Canyon

Been looking at doing the helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon, but I've searched this thread and it's negative towards it.

Is that still the case? People I've spoken with praise the helicopter tours.

Is there a better/cheaper way to do it?

The other half isn't keen on the plane journey then the bus ride. She feels she won't see much from the air this way.

I drove from Vegas to the south rim and back in one day.

10 hours driving 600 miles. I would not recommend it. If you want to visit south rim then stay overnight.

I wish i had done the flight and landed at south rim.

Car hire vancouver

Booked a premium class avis car last year, for next month. £507
Same booking today £1274!

Bigger issue really is the weakness of the pound at the moment, it makes everything 10-15% more expensive.

Hotel prices

I would book before the recent falls in the pound go through we have lost about 15% on spending money in the last week but most things are paid for as we could see the possibility of this happening. On a side note we are camping at glacier near where a bear killed a forrest ranger.

I've booked 50% of hotels already, but still have Vegas, San Francisco and most of the PCH hotels left to book.

Also our San Diego hotel was book now pay later :(, hopefully the pound is stronger by the time we go

Thought hotels were generally more expensive the closer to the date that you want to stay as a matter of rule?

I'm looking at booking flights etc asap really but were not going until next May/June

I got back Friday - knackered and jet lagged!

Picked car up in LAX, drove around Orange County / Newport beach for a few days. Drove from orange county to the South Rim Grand canyon, which was epic. Stayed the night there, then headed to Vegas from the Grand Canyon, stopped a hoover dam on the way down. Really lovely, but long drive. Did near enough 1000 miles during the trip. Ditched the car at Vegas, as there's not much point having one there!

Now onto planning the next one :D

Overall a pretty good trip.

Detroit is worth a visit - we did the RenCen, a DIY tour of the main sights / abandoned buildings, and also the Henry Ford Museum is excellent.

Doing 3 weeks in September everything was pretty much paid for in Jan/Feb luckily.

Going:

- Vegas to Southrim and returning to Vegas
- Vegas to San Diego via Kelso
- San Diego to Anaheim
- Anaheim to LA
- LA to Pismo
- Pismo to Monterey
- Monterey to San Francisco
- San Francisco to Yosemite
- Yosemite to Death Valley
- Death Valley back to Vegas

We paid extra for a guaranteed mustang from Hertz. Not sure if the additional breakdown cover and insurance is worth it? Anyone needed to use it before?
