Roads where drivers either always break the speed limit or never go near it...

The thing is, many, MANY people think that the speed limit for a single carriageway road is 40mph.
I drive the road below every day, and every day I get stuck behind someone doing <40mph.

The thing is, it goes in to a 30 limit at the end and the drivers I'm stuck behind carry on at 40mph and the people behind me get annoyed when I slow down to 30.

The street where I live is a 20 limit because there's a primary school on it. Mums every day come flying down the road at 30+ to take their kids to school. These are the same mums that park across the dropped curb to my driveway and then complain when I have the audacity to ask them to move so I can get my car out.

What people think that the speed limit for a single carriageway is 40MPH? Why on earth do they think that?

It is for trucks, I know that!

Amazes me when I'm trundling along said type of road at a steady 40, running often at my maximum gross weight (44t) I come across somebody who has to brake at the merest hint of a bend, when I - despite my size & weight - don't need too! I end up infuriating the queue of cars sat behind me who think I'm the one slowing down....

Because many people are not driving, they are merely operating their vehicle as they would a domestic appliance.

I.e. Without thinking nor reading the handbook first! :D

The A84 road between Oban & Glasgow is really bad for it.

You catch up with people in the 60 zones as they are doing 40-50mph, but as soon as they get to 30 areas they continue on doing 40-50mph

Pedant hat On: Check

Where are these "60 Zones"

I always thought they were a limit NOT a target.

However the rest of the post is so so so true.

40mph in a 50 limit then 40mph in a 30 limit. And dont forgot flooring it through a Amber/Red (More Red than Amber)

I attempted to nip through on an Amber once by flooring it, it then became very apparent to me, clearer than ever before, that 55HP isn't very much, and it went red before I got through.

Cue two weeks of worrying about getting points because of the camera on the junction (nothing happened thankfully) and me never doing it again.

These people need a letter to land on their doormat if accidentally going through a red doesn't worry them sufficiently to not do it anymore.

What really gets my goat up is when I pootle about a 20mph zone at 20mph, and yet I can have an Xsara Picasso or Sharan etc, woman at the wheel with kids in, flying up my bum at 30+ and then visibly wanting to overtake me.

And I have every certainty that if they had met themselves coming the other way doing whatever speed they would have been doing if I wasn't there, they would be the ones saying, "It's a 20 zone think of the children etc"

It's the same thing with the housing estate my parents live on. Fairly winding, cars parked either sides of the road, on a hill, yet people will happily fly around corners at 20mph without a care in the world. If I so happen to be driving there going at 10mph because I know how bad the area is and they come flying around a corner only to be suddenly faced with me coming the other way, I'm the one who gets a dirty look from them...

People who drive massively under the speed limit when there isn't another lane available to pass are very irratating. (e.g. single carriage ways/roads etc)

However people driving up my arse when I am in a average camera zone on the speed limit also should have a special seat reserved for themselves in hell.

Slip roads! All the slip roads near here seem to be full of people thinking it's a great idea to join the motorway at 40mph. If the slip road has 2 lanes they are quite often sat in the outside lane of it >: (!!!

One thing i ****ING HATE are people doing 20 in 30 zone. ****es me off as i dont overtake in city so bumper hug then lights flashing then horning.
** ****** some people get paid to deliver **** on time !!!

If you did that to me when I was at the speed limit, then I'd slow down :p

Saying that, I stick to 32 indicated in 30 zones (where safe to do so). If you want to speed, go for it, but don't try and force me to.

If someone did that in front of me I'd be screwed. I need the entire length of a motorway slip road, flooring it and quick shifting, to get up to a speed at which I can comfortably merge. If someone held me up at 40 I'd probably end up sitting at the end of the slip-road or 10 years...

Old Polo's aren't for motorways. :p

This makes you worse than they are. Stop it. How often does it work? Hm?

What if you panic them and they touch the brakes?

There's a section of the A34 near Cheadle / Handforth which must be the least observed 30 zone in the entire country. I've literally never seen anyone drive along it at less than 40 / 50.

I remember many years ago I was helping my mother move her bees in her VW Polo, so we were travelling very slowly and carefully. Cue toots from drivers behind. Until I got out fully kitted up in a bee suit. :D

NOT THE BEES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

bet they had a pretty damn confused looks on their faces!!! :p

I put up with this on the a35 through the new forest every day, following people doing 45 to 55 when most people, me included, will happy do 70. The thing is these people speed up on some of the downhill slopes, at the bottom of which are sometimes junctions so if they're trying to be safe they're going fastest in the most hazardous places...
