roadside recovery - who to use ?

Joined the AA when my old car broke down on the motorway costing me £155 at the roadside and the repair didn't even get me home. But since i've joined i got rid of that car got a new one havent had to call them out yet :)

Norwich Union sold me some breakdown cover at the beginning of the year when I moved to them for insurance.
As far as I can tell and the impression I get is that it is still something to do with the AA.
Mainly because the AA called me after my roadside cover expired, I told them I was now with NUD and the guy said "Ah, ya still with us anyway then" and that was it.

Touch wood not needed to use them yet so cannot comment on service, but the price was good.

Norwich Union own the RAC, so it wouldn't be anything to do with the AA.

If you tell them you have a kid with you, they'll be quicker, supposedly.
They raise the priority on calls for several reasons, if there's kids, single woman, on a motorway etc etc.

Im with RAC and all 3 times ive called them its never been more than 30 mins before they are with me, although im not sure what they are like outside of London as all of mine have been within london.

AA have NEVER let me down and I've had some number of cars break down and be relayed home no questions asked ;)

However, they are expensive and a lot of insurance companies offer roadside assistance for just a little extra. That is probably well worth looking into first.

Something to bear in mind is most recovery firms use a network of local firms so basically if AA let you down in a particular area the bets are that Green Flag and RAC are using the same guy so they would have let you down too. I've only ever had one real AA truck pick a car up and I've had 5 cars towed.

My mum added me to her AA policy, which I think covers everything (home start, relay, roadside assistance),

Only had to use it once, that was when I was ~20 outside bristol on the M4 (going home, another ~150 miles to go) and the engine seized on my astra (believe the oil pump failed, still had oil but light came on and was doing 70 'ish' in the fast lane at the time :p)

They arrived within 30 minutes and took me all the way back home, took a tad longer than I was expecting but hey, good service imo :)

Didn't help when I was sat at the side of an unlit, NSL dual carriageway, without a hard shoulder...

I bank with Lloyds and for a couple of quid a month you get basic AA cover and mobile phone insurance - kerching!

Only used them once when I crashed my car and needed the chassis towed home

Does anyone know if the RAC email you a temporary membership number like the AA do when you join online? The website doesn't seem to say; it just says 'roadside assistance is available immediately' in the T&Cs.

When you join online they link you to a page which lets you print out temporary membership cards.

I've had to call them on a couple of occasions and they were there within half an hour and got me going again both times. Recently phoned to cancel, got through to a friendly advisor in seconds and was off the phone within a minute. Excellent customer service and will definately be using again when my free VW assistance runs out.

Green Flag amazed me - alternator went when I was miles from anywhere (nearest town 15 miles) and rolled into a pub car park. Phoned them, odered a pint and only had 1/4 of the pint and they arrived, and I drink quick!

G/F has RAC and they've rocked up in half hour or so, when I've usede her policy (mention my wee lad and they come running!)

Out of the 2 I'd prefer green flag, as they're contracted by both AA and RAC, but respond to green flag members as a priority (or so the bloke who towed me home said).
