I was under the illusion that roaming profiles in a server 2003 domain, only transfer the data that has changed since the last log off, not the complete profile as it use to be in a 2000 domain. IF this is the case, why then does it take so longer to load a profile on an XP machine that has a large profile, versus a new roaming profile? Surely, if the large, used profile, had been saved to the server correctly when logging out, when it comes to logging in, it'll simply load the profile from the copy on the local PC, so it should be pretty instantaneous, other than the fact of authentication and establishing the correct permissions etc........

Can see IE's temp files could cause the problem, also, users are storing files on their desktop and in their my documents folder. This user in particular has nearly 4GB of files shared beteen the two locations. I didn't think this would cause a problem as its stored on the local PC?

It needs to check all the files for changes. If there is a change in file size, it'll redownload the file again which does take some time.

We've had a similar problem and although the files don't get physically copied over unless it's changed, the profile manager still has to scan and compare the local with the networked profile before arriving at a merged local which is what takes time. You can also omit some folders like the IE Temp folder in the copy/scan via GPO so that the listed folders won't be copied back and fourth.

We have GPO polices to re-direct My Document away from the profile and have a limit of 100 ish Meg. If they drop a large file on the desktop it will alert them with a system tray pop-up.

We also have the same, the users desktop and my documents (amongst other things ) are redirected to their main home network drive.

Dont really see the point in roaming profiles. If one of our users needs to work at another desk they login to that machine and access their files from the network

I have this problem now and then at work, it's usually itunes, holiday snaps or some other garbage being dumped on a works PC. redirect the documents folder and use the GPOs for ignoring temp and temporary internet files folders.

Last I gave up and ended up making a few entries in the login script that would wipe anything in the local and server cache for both temp and temp internet files. Haven't really had a problem since.. other than itunes.

I guess that would depend on the type of user and what applications they are using. Some wish to carry there custom settings for particular applications.

Roaming profiles are incredibly useful in the right environment. Would be a total pain in the arse if I had to support our user base without them
