Robot Wars

Aye - I remember it all too well. Went to a live show or two (they ran them at the TW Live Events - and yes, I miss Tomorrows World too).

Like Kaiowas I sought utter destruction, so it had to be Hypnodisc really. Razer was a close second though, and probably Chaos 2 third just for dumping stuff out of the arena.

To be fair though it was pretty rubbish but the Kevlar shell and the Tanto blade made up for it.

Mortis always had so much potential but either broke down or some other random thing happened. The axe on it was so fast, much faster than Shunt's axe but didnt have the real power to get through anything.

Then they added the 'srimech' to it next to the axe and it looked a bit rubbish and didnt work properly. What cracked me up was when they came back for their 2nd appearance on it with the massive controller/backpack thing.

Overall Razer was easily my favourite and though it was amazing, was heartbroken when it malfunctioned very early on in one series (possibly the 3rd) where the beak opened up fully causing its 'tail' to go into the ground and propping it up in the air.

Always felt Robot wars was a bit of a missed opportunity I thought there could have been some awesome innovation if big technology corporations got involved and entered but it ended up being 75% kids making big metal boxes with which bounced into one another.

Razor was the best robot on it by about a million miles imo one of only a handful of robots which were actually destructive it also looked the business. Would love to know how much that actually cost to make I'm thinking a small fortune!

The guy who invented the flipper (Rex Garrod I think his name was?) was a legend as well shame he seemed to pack it in after the first few series remember he invented a weapon to get him out of the pit once (didn't work but still!)

I still watch Robot Wars Extreme repeats at weekends sometimes. There was a quality one the other week where instead of fighting they all went after the house robots.

Three biggest legends for me are:

-Hypnodisc
-Chaos II
-Razer

The biggest issue for me was that for a 45min show, there was a helluva lot of faffing about. I had (have...) a massive crush on Philippa Forrester so I didn't mind her strutting her stuff for a bit, but in terms of proper action you often only got maybe 10mins worth of carnage.

I think after the early series they did cotton a bit, as they ditched all those wierd events like football, assault courses etc. Some of them were actually not bad but most people just tune in to see the fights.

Definitely good TV though and Im wondering why it died on its arse?
I always thought it lost its way when they started to move away from straight one on one fights to doing trials and all sorts of pointless other things that were just plain dull compared to robots being smashed to bits.

I feel I should point out there's a slight problem with that. They started with trials - first series had an obstacle course, for example. :)

Most of the early 'bots', while certainly bigger and more powerful than a decent RC car, weren't much more capable.

Yeah, I noticed in the later episodes they did multiple robots in one ring etc, but I thought the earlier series' were more trial orientated like the pinball and whatnot.

I still reckon it could be a winner still.

i did like the earlier series with cassius, when he was on the big ramp, IICR, and he went upside down.

then his creator (rex?) used the flipper to flip it back up....

i was amazed.

then Wheely Big Cheese and its massive flipper, chucking a robot out of the arena.

then came Hypnodisc, my favourite of all RW robots, till this day. it was amazing when it came out against that flimsy big robot, and totally nakeded it :D

Chaos2 with that gay guy/woman was a superb robot. so small, yet so power full at flipping.

lastly, razor..... i would have loved to see this up against hypnodisc.

you lot have already said enough about razor.

BTW who won the 7th series of RW, and anyone got a YT of it?

jesus christ that warhead disk is mad, honestly that thing literally destroys anything that touches it.

My favourite robot had to be Razer, just because it was so unbelievably clever in its design, in the way it could ALWAYS get back from being flipped, and that it just had such unbelievable crushing power (4 ton per square inch at the tip).

But as for hypno-disc, it was just such a destructive monster it always put on an amazing show, just tearing absolutely EVERYTHING to pieces :p

Good video of hypno-disc: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69OgXjPantc&NR=1

I was wondering how long it'd take someone to mention him, he was a bit odd!

I remebr that guy, before the commentator mentioned his name was George I couldnt really tell whether he/she was male/female:confused:

I used to imagine what would be a good design for a robot, I liked the idea of a flamethrower with maybe an acid gun, but that probably wouldnt have been alllowed...

Chaos 2 ,Hypnodisc and Razer where my personal favorites. Of course, Sir Killalot was the best house robot no doubt.
