Ok.. I realise it isn't for a few months, but I will need to reliably take my HDD data with me from 3 or 4 different drives abroad, and would like a drive that is somewhere between 500gb to 1TB.

I need a robust travel HDD (or alternative) that will cope with air travel and baggage handling, hopefully for well under £100.

You could look at one of these.

I assume you want a USB powered drive for travelling.

You could put one of those in you hand luggage. It might cause less issues than putting it in your hold luggage.

When I say travel, I just mean 'for the trip'. I just need the data to get to the other side of the pacific for one trip. I am doubting a 'non-locking' HDD would put up with being thrown around in baggage (or at least it's pretty risky?). I don't need it to be USB, but I suppose that's convienient.

Pretty nice drives though. It doesn't have to be 2.5" btw.

What do you mean 'non-locking' HDD?

As far as I'm aware all HDD's park the heads when powered down.

I would still say that something you can put in your hand luggage would be a better option.

The handling of the drive would be in your own hands rather than entrusting it to baggage handlers throwing your suitcase around.

You also don't know what might happen when they X-ray your suitcase and see an "electronic device" inside.

There are cheaper portable drives if you plan on carrying it yourself and know it will be treated with respect.

Perhaps a bit of research into any security issues is in order.
