Roccat Kave's constant static

Reply from Roccat:

Hello Mark,

Thanks for choosing the ROCCAT Kave.

This phenomenon can happen with surround headsets which are not only connected to the PC by USB, but also via analog input (jack plug). This sound is in fact caused by electromagnetic pulse. Such a thing is happening when electricity is running thru metal. If the components (i.e. your soundcard) are build close together, then it can happen that these audio signals are being transmitted.

Some sound cards have an option which is counteracting this known problem. This option is called "PC Beep". Please have a look into your audio settings which you can find in the system management. Or into the driver of the sound card.

Here is an example for the option you are looking for, which you can find on Google:

You could also try a different USB-Port.

Another possible source: In case there is a cordless telephone or a base station near the Kave (i.e. on your desk), the radio signal can interfere with the Kave. If this is the case please choose a more distant position for it.
And you can also have a look into your "control panel" under "Sounds" (or into your soundcard driver) if there is a flag mentioning "Digital E/A", and to make sure it's turned off.

In case none of these points is solving the problem: Since you have already tried a different soundcard which didn't help, there is a chance that it is caused by a hardware defect. If none of the above mentioned helps you can exchange it at overclockers. That is of course possible when the product is defective. The exchange you speak of, where a product you maybe give someone as a gift and it cannot be returned once the packaging has been opened, is a totally different thing.

I can't for love nor money find the "PC Beep" option ANYWHERE! It's annoying because it seems to work for a lot of people. I have the Asus M4a79XTD EVO, where the onboard uses VIA HD Audio, anyone know where I might find it?

Looks like I'm emailing OcUK again!

just an update. Sent them back to OcUK, they sent back a replacement pair so I am guessing they confirmed that there was static. Just tried the new pair and sitll got the same constant static noise! So ****ed off.

Guess I will send them back and request a refund, but now I am not sure what headset to go for :( My sennheiser PC165's were fine, maybe the Kaves just arent as good quality and I am not use to them.

Can anyone recommend a GOOD gaming headset for rough the same price? 60ish quid. It doesnt have to be 5.1, just good quality and good for gaming with a mic. Maybe even a slightly cheaper one and then an xonar soundcard or something?

Thanks guys

Are you using a soundcard? Some soundcars with stereo headphones do a better job of presenting 5.1 than the Kaves anyway.

I am gonna get the Corsair HS1. I can't decide wether to get HS1A and xonar DG, or HS1 USB. If the USB works with PS3 I will get it, if not then its the HS1A and DG.

How sure are you though? Turtle beach headphones and madcatza are USB arent they? I need someone to 100% confirm that the HS1's work or don't work with PS3

Hi,

A lot of the reviews say HS1's are PC only. Look on You tube..

HS1a's here and hiss free.

I have the kaves and they hiss too, but it is very quiet to me. Kaves and Xonar DG do not mix, they echo in BBC2...

Xonar DG and HS1a's for me all the way. Think the cans are on sale, or were last week for 29.99...

Hi von, in the other thread you said that the hs1a's work with the pc with an adaptor??? Is this true? And how much would the adapter set me back and what type is it? If this is true then the HS1As and DG are a no brainer!!!

Cheers

Hi,

I use a simple 3.5 splitter( one male into green jack, and two identical female outputs on the adaptor for the speakers and HS1a'a) for my PC sound card. But some may argue impedence is lost by this, but they sound great to me. Costs 2.96 from M*****/electronics place.? Or your sound card came with one.. I can then plug my Creative t20 speakers and HS1a's into the stereo jack of my soundcard.

Yes,

With the PS3, you have the optical (i don t use that), the HDMI (can t use that) or the AV splitter for the three coloured plus...I have an adaptor that cost me little or nothing that links the white and red cables for stereo sound, a male adaptor, I then add a female adaptor on top so I can plug my head phones to it...but impdence is a factor there and may be quiet. What I found effective was sticking a pair of cheap speakers, plugging the male adapted cable in the 3.5 female jack of the speakers, I then use the front head phone jack of my Creative T20's for the HS1'a..phew.

or you could simply plug in tv headphone jack, but lots of tv headphone jacks sound s***,

I hope that helps...

Oh or you could buy some Turtle Beach Headphones!!!

Yes, but you don t really need one, you can simply plug them into your PC front jack or your speakers.

I use a 3.5 splitter for my speakers and HS1a's I then feed both from X-fi Titanium. When I want to use the other I either turn off lower volume for headphones or speakers respectively. Some would argue a splitter would lose sound quality, but to be honest, so does plugging your head phones into your PC speakers if they are cheap and nasty, because you rely on the quality of the audio components in your speakers.

Cheers

Von

Whoops double posts

Oh you can get one for less then 3 pounds(the cheap adapter). From a place that sounds like sapling...

Awesome thanks so much for clearing that up! HS1A's and Xonar is a no brainer then, do you know the actual name of the adaptor I need to plug them into the PS3? Trying to find it.

Thanks again, much appreciated!

EDIT: HUm I suppose I could just plug them directly into my monitor? Would that reduce the quality by a noticeable amount though? And to save hassell of constantly unplugging it from my monitor and into my PC etc, is there some kind of adapter that allows me to easily switch them?

When you say plug into my monitor, I assume you mean headphones?

Depends if your montior has an audio connection to your PC, PS3.

Just go into the place that ryhmes with sapling and ask for a 3.5 mil audio splitter, so you can split the sound output of your PC. iit has male connection for your sound card and two femaile connections for your speakers and headphones. I saw one today for less then three pounds...

As for the PS3 you need an almost identical looking adapter, that you can plug the av leads that came with your PS3 (the white and red cables have audio stereo). But you may not want the hassle as you could simply plug HS1a's into the 3.5 head phone jack of the TV, if that is what you are using for your PS3.

To summarise you don't really need any adapters really, you can either plug your HS1a's directly into the soundcard ( or front audio) or your tv. But bear in mind the loss of impedence if you plug your high quality gear into either cheapo speakers, or the usually lacking jack on the tv

PS simply type 3.5 audio splitter into Google and see numerous pictures. :)
