Its been brought to my attention that the Rocket Arena mod for Quake 4 has recently been released. I used to love the previous versions and im seriously tempted to purchase Quake 4 to give it a go, but ive heard several negative things about Q4 and I dont want to buy it to find out that theres no servers or no players!

Anyone know if theres an active RA community still? Anyone played RA4, if so give me a lowdown :p

Thanks.

I made a thread bout this a while ago, i got q4 and RA4 and use to play actively in RA3 clan matches was fantastic! Altho it seems RA4 isnt as popular :( I find it difficult to find a server to play on and not many people seem to play it that i see. Im probs missing something tho ill have a look in a bit and report back :D

Best thing about RA3 was the community no "Omfg u haxor! all the time :D

well i heard the new patch makes q4 feel a bit different but as a whole q4 doesnt feel as fast as 3. Its still pretty good tho i just havent had chance to get into it as much

read posts

ive played both as said RA3 feels quicker but RA4 is still quite good! Ive just got the patch so im gonna try it as i heard it makes quite a big difference!

I should probably have given it a longer bash, but it felt really clunky compared to RA3 personally :/

RA3 sort of alive and kicking!

Behold my awesome powers of thread necromancy!!
Was working really late last night and after shutting down Word I felt a long-forgotten urge to frag some real people online, so, hoping beyond hope, I launched RA3, and lo and behold! There was a server with 4 people in it! Played for 45', was VERY rusty at it but was fun! :D

According to those guys I was playing with the RA3 community only numbers around 30-40 people these days - and this is worldwide! Half of those apparently use wall hacks etc as well, so good servers are hard to find unless you want Clan Arena in which case you can usually get a game on the Planet Quake server. We even exchanged MSN addresses so they could give me a shout when they needed more people for a server.

They also told me that RA4 is still in beta, which is why I was surprised to read that you guys are already playing it.

Hang on... you can connect to RA3 servers using a Q4 client? Or do you just mean you used to play RA3 and are now playing RA4?

For those of you still on RA3, let me know if you want a game! I'm very rusty so would make an easy target for you! ;) I don't plan to get Q4 until I upgrade my system (probably around Christmastime), but I'll probably end up going wherever the community goes, so if RA4 becomes popular I'll switch over, eve if it does feel a bit slower, but not until then.

Interested in the point about playing RA3 using Q4, can someone comfirm that? RA3 is one of my favourite online games of all time, at its peak, it was great. And that was even at the point when I was playing using 56k, would love to give it a shot using my shiney 10mb line! :D

Would be great if we could get a few players from here so we could start playing again.

I was on 56k too when I was active in RA3 (and on a 450MHz PII with a Geforce 2 video card as well!:p) and that was exactly why I got into it initially: my line was so bad it couldn't handle large maps with a lot of players - 1v1 made things smoother, though I was still on 300ms pings. However, once I got into the "duel" mentality I never looked back and it became my favourite type of deathmatch ever! :D

I used to play a lot of Rocket Arena 2 back in the day.

I'm hoping Rocket Arena 4 becomes popular soon so that I can sink my teeth in to that.

Ah yes the memories :p

I was on exactly the same specs (P3 450, 256mb RAM, Geforce2mx) and my trusty Diamondblaster 56e modem that I used to spend hours tweaking to try and get stable sub 300 pings :D

And yes, it was good because i used to stick to the 1v1's which my setup could handle. Kind of got used to aiming rockets a few yards ahead!

So im assuming you cant play RA3 through the Q4 client? If theres an active commucity though may start searching for a copy of Q3 if RA4 isnt up to much...

Yeah, i think I misread R5Rich's post... :o
It's not SWARMING out there, but if you have the All-Seeing Eye you won't have trouble finding a populated european server with a few spots open. The problem is I usually kill the fun because everyone still playing is in a clan that practices every day and I'm an old git with crap reflexes who hasn't played it in 5 years! :p
