currently have a amazon firestick, but it is way under powered. menu is slow, some apps like iplayer have voice sync issues, and generally its pretty rubbish, pretty sure its all due to an under powered chip.

is the roku2 or 3 far more powerful and actually work probably? other benefit is Roku has nowtv.

or any other similar devices.
amazon video, Netflix, nowtv, and normal channel on demand ones.

Roku is the only device with every on demand available.

The Roku 2 and 3 are basically the same (except the remote).

I have had the Roku 2 (I replaced a full HTPC setup with it) for getting on two years now (when the updated 4205EU was released) and have no issues at all with it playing anything I have tried on it (I use it largely for Plex).

I had a Firestick. Worked fine generally, but was truly awful if my wifi was feeling a bit off it's game.

Do you have the option to connect a Roku via ethernet? If so, that's a good reason to change as IMO the benefit improvement with any renderer will be via giving it a good data feed, i.e. a wired connection.

Sounds like the onboard at to go, yeah I can plug it into the router, but WiFi isn't the issue. Even the home screen is slow and laggy. Once things are playing its fine. Just the slow menus are doing my head in.

I really love the Roku, brilliant bit of kit.

The only thing which I couldnt get on with was with Plex there were far too few posters visible (ie they didnt appear to be scalable) - on the same screen I could get something rediciously small like 12 posters on the screen at once, compared to about 30 in web view on a pc (and when you have 100's of movies, that few just becomes a pain)

Love my Roku. Used to have an LT which became a bit sluggish and only supported 720p so upgraded to a 3 which is much faster.

Having briefly owned a firetv stick I can say the Roku 3 is faster with far superior Wi-Fi range.

Not quite true, a PS3 is an equally good media player that has all of the on demand services as well. But yes in terms of stand alone media only players Roku's are pretty much the only fully featured ones.

I have the 2 in my bedroom and its brilliant, particularly with it having the headphone socket on the remote.

Yeah I was thinking standalone devices.

Also you must have the older 2 if you have the headphone socket. The new one is quicker and generally better (except for the headphone part).

weird, i've never had sink issues with my firestick. It's not the quickest through the menus but its OK. My nowTv box is quicker (roku 2), my BT STB box is the fastest.

Hardware-wise, NowTv boxes are subsidized roku2s. Cheaper to buy a nowTv box. Even cheaper if you wait as you can normally get a box and entertainment or movie pass as a bundle stupidly cheap. Last time i bought two boxes, a 4 month movie pass and a 6 month entertainment pass for £38. Cheaper than the passes are normally, got the boxes free :p only problem? they dont support netflix / plex ect without side-loading, but that's not much of an issue. Unsure on Amazon instant video though.

Oh yeah its couple of years old now and it was the headphone socket on the remote that drew me to it, its very handy for watching stuff while 'the she' is asleep next to me with the added bonus that it drowns out her snoring as well.

I've got one of those too, and I don't own a Roku!

I am waiting to see what happens with roku 3 & 4205 prices when(if?) the 4 is finally released in the UK , versions are documented here except 4205
I believe they still have some s/w problems with 4 (due to change to ST chip?), but USA has some even newer versions.
the 4 and newer will also have h265 - do not believe that is on 3, plus 4K netflix (which given higher 25Mbs bitrate may look better, than ~7Mbs 1080 , even if downscaled to a 1080 tv - if it will do that)

Fine so far, but the Web lacks a list of what can be viewed here in Europe. I'd prefer this device as I want to keep Google out
of my life as far as possible, so their streamer is out.

My TV is HD, Internet connectable via HDMI/Ethernet but isn't a smart TV.

So far I have been unable to find anything which explains how Roku works.

Have we the UK catchup channels? French TV, (BFM etc), German TV ?
