Ronnie Biggs released!

Surely my cynical side wasn't right when I said he'd make a quick recovery before the ink was dry. Should be carted straight back inside and made to finish the sentence he was handed down!

I can't figure out why the conditions attached (or the lack of conditions which is worse) to the compassionate release should allow him to not serve out the rest of his sentence. The clue is in the name "compassionate" - the reasons for the compassion have disappeared so the release should be ended also.

I've also only just notice that Giovanni De Stefano is his legal advisor - that man's has always struck me as a particularly odious example of humanity.

100% agree mate. Last week on 5 Live his lawyer was getting quite angry that people were outraged that Biggs was released on compassionate grounds. I think his arguement was that because Biggs was ill and old, he should be allowed out.

Steve Nolan asked if the people who had the mental trauma of being robbed, the guy who was struck during the robbery and all the people in the world who saw him laughing it up in Brazil should be compassionate. He basically answered yes.

Does that mean any old person on deaths door can just commit any crime and then be released? If so my Granddad's going to have a field day :p

And Mick Whelan, general secretary of train drivers' union Aslef, expressed sympathy for Biggs's family but said: "We have always regarded Biggs as a nonentity and a criminal who took part in a violent robbery which resulted in the death of a train driver."

now we just need Phil Collins to pop his clogs, and the circle is complete
