I've just inherited a Galaxy Ace, the first smart phone I've had and I'm pretty much a noob when it comes to mobiles.

Reading up, I've decided to try rooting the phone to run Gingerbread. Quick question; the guides say an SD card is essential, but what I can't seem to find is if capacity is an issue. Basically can I root it with only a 128mb card? Any guidance would be very much appreciated.

At a guess (can you provide a link to said guide?) the card size needs to be equal to the amount of space the ROM image takes up. A 2/4gig card is cheap as hell though, if you plan to ever put any apps/music on it you might as well buy one.

If Gingerbread is your only reason to root it then I wouldn't bother. The differences between Froyo and Gingerbread aren't even worth mentioning.

You'll notice zero difference in day to day use and it is possible to brick your phone if you do it wrong.

Of course if you want some specific features that rooting and flashing a new ROM will add then go ahead but make sure that you do as much reading as possible on the subject.

Are you sure that your phone didn't come with an SD card? I've got someone sat next to me atm who's Ace came with a 2gb card already installed.

ManCuBus, the reason I wanted to root the phone is to get more from the battery. A pal said that that Gingerbread utilises the battery power a whole lot better than Froyo and overall the phone would be more responsive. From your post, I guess thats not true then? I was given the phone and all it had was the 128mb card.

ChrisGTL, Yep, thats the one. Thanks for the link, I'll have a look through that although from what ManCuBus has said i may not need to bother changing anything.

Many thanks guys.

Well I've had loads of phones with and flashed loads of different ROM's and some of them make big claims about battery life. I've not noticed any difference worth noting between Froyo & Gingerbread.

The thing that made the biggest difference in battery life to me was installing a free app called 'Green Power' from the market.

It basically disables data / Wifi etc while the screen is off and enables it every 15 mins (or whatever you set it to) for 30 secs to 1 min.

With it installed I get about 1%-2% drain per hour rather than the 5% without it installed. Give it a try.
