Ok I'm over 19 stone...I'm an intensive care nurse, I'm a light blue belt in ju jitsu, I'm a married man of 2 kids and have an excellent wife who happens to be a senior physio.

But I am lazy and a glutton! I admit it....but this going to change...I'm morbidly obese, I feel my chest tighten at times, I hate the stairs and my knees feel like they belong to a 50 year old but I'm only 35!

I'm awaiting the results of an MRI on my right knee, I think I've torn my meniscus and will need an arthroscopy to clean it up. But this isn't going to slow me down.

I need some help on sorting my gluttony, I'm very open about it, I snack when I'm bored, and finish the lot, nothing gets put back in the kitchen cupboard for later.

So.....that's me....I don't want to post pics but at over 19 stones and at 5 foot 9 inches you can get the picture.

I've decided to find a personal trainer in my area and get started. My wife and kids deserve a fitter family member.

So here it goes...wish me luck!

Ps anyone else here use a personal trainer?

Congratulations on joining the party! :)

PTs can be very variable, with a lot being halfway to useless. The best thing you can do is think about what you want, what you are prepared to do, and what kind of lifestyle you want to lead. And then ask your questions in the primary forum, where there are a lot of very knowledgeable people...

The thing to remember is that physical training and lifestyle management are not silver bullets, but hard work and must last as long as you want the benefits. In other words: the rest of your life. :)

Good luck, and we're here to help and support!

Read some of the logs around here for inspiration. The logs and stories on here are pretty much what got me stuck in to training! I was never huge or massively unfit but I wasn't happy but this year I've managed to complete a half marathon and a marathon and I'm now the fittest I've ever been at 29. :)

You've come to the right place though. There are loads of really knowledgable guys on here who are only too happy to help. (There are some urine extractotrs too but it's all part of the fun. :D)

I've had a couple of friends use personal trainers but they have only been for cardio/fitness/forced motivational purposes. Personally If I was starting out I'd have a couple of sessions with the pt, see what he recommends and then post it here for a critique.

Good luck! :)

mate..it doesnt mater yout age and 35 isnt old! You want to improove and youve made a big step by admitting it here.
As said above..there is plenty knowledge and help here (even though its a computer forum). There is some spot on guys who know there ****

so really..just get too it :D

personal trainer.....if only you need the boost personally. But you can learn just as much if not more from zee internets :D

The best thing you can do now is formulate a plan that works for you. A PT can help with this (if you find one that can discern arse from elbow), but doing your own research is invaluable. Have a read around the logs and the "SA rules and links thread", there are some truly inspirational stories.

Good luck, and don't hesitate to ask questions :)

19 stone. Frankly this is a lot to do with diet, but at your weight, you might want to put some cardio in. If your knees messed up, you could try some hand cycling for that.

First thing:
Keep a food log.
Log everything, and I mean everything over a week period. Liquids and food, no exceptions. No one judges you on what you eat if you're looking to improve it :)
I'm betting the first thing to change will be cutting out the snacks though. The easiest way to do this is to not buy them. I always find it much easier to say no at the till compared to the cupboard. Not sure how easy that'll be with kids and a family, but see if you can talk to your wife and do something about it. (Even if she puts a padlock on the cupboard door, and doesn't tell you the code).

Get some weight training in there too though. Lifting weights will burn calories still, and build muscle at the time.

Check some other logs though, and see what others are doing and saying :)

As others have said, so long as you're serious, then people are willing to put the time in here, it's a great community for that, and you may find you don't need a PT.

ok first question...I need to be able to throw people for 4-5 hours with out many breaks in my next grading. I need stamina and buckets of it.

How do I improve stamina?

Throwing people? Jiu Jitsu?

If that's the case, then you're looking at lots more of the given martial art, at elevated intensities.

If you're in the gym, interval/shuttle work (high intensity -> low intensity -> high), and compound weight work for big sets would be helpful. Squats, dead lifts, etc.

However, with a torn meniscus, you should be very careful and think about whether you need your grading that much.

Ok so had an arthroscopy of my knee today...lots and lots of patella and meniscal shaving and shaved my synovial sack too, he told me I'm looking at a petal femoral joint replacement in the future...so I'm laid up for a week or so, then what? Any suggestions? I'm really frustrated and lack of movement is inhibiting my weight loss. Even thinking of wheel chair aerobics for a few days to get my heart rate up.

If you need a PT to get you going (and show you the ropes as such) I don't see a problem with that at all. However once you're back in to the swing of things you should be able to rely upon your own ambition and determination to get things done, I'm sure this is your plan. Best of luck, will keep my eyes on this :)

As said, things like circuits, a mixture of high & low intensity and a variety of exercises will be the best approach.

Still do high weights - it just means longer rest times if you're pushing it, and being honest with yourself as to when you've reached the limit. :)

I train alone all the time. :)
