I guess it depends how far into the process you take the e-commerce system on the clients site. Most payment systems like Protx will let you send the persons totals and address details encrypted to their secure pages. I have a client who wants to store cc's in their DB and do manual merchant processing. That's secure connection and encryption city which will be a worrying challenge.
 
All good info guys. I will only start developing my own shopping cart if I cannot get a commercial (or semi-commercial) shopping cart to fall in line with the look and feel of my clients site. Hopefully I can avoid hair loss and sleepless nights. oh hang on i have a 1 year old son so there is no way I can get away from sleepless nights :(

I'm leaning towards cubecart + worldpay at the moment btw.
