There is a standard unit. 1GB = 1024 MB. Manufacturers just choose to have 1 GB = 1000 MB so their drives look bigger than they are.

I'm afraid you're not quite right (or just partially). Manufacturers calculate 1000B=1KB, 1000KB=1MB, 1000MB=1GB, 1GB=1TB.

1TB will have ~931GB of formatted capacity.
