Hi,

I've been saving a bit of money recently and have decided to treat my self to a RTW tour. I reckon I will have roughly a month to do it in (probably September).

The only criteria are that I go to Australia and Chile to see family. Do you guys have any ideas of places to go? Pictures would be nice, to get me excited!!

Cheers,

Matt

One month for a RTW tour? You flying with the RAF or something?! Either tack a few more weeks onto it, or choose your locations very carefully.

I'll start you off - Singapore, Sydney, Auckland - then South America, then home via America.

lol :D

techy6 has a point though. One month isnt a lot of time at all. In fact if you definately need to go to Oz and SA, then, um, that's pretty much it. 2 weeks travelling Australia and then two weeks travelling South America. Any less in either and you'd be running around like a loony. Take into account the best part of a week seeing family at both and you're looking at more like a week to 'travel' in each. It's hardly a RTW trip.

Unless of course you're happy just to see a few big cities (i have got the wrong end of the stick before in a thread similar to this..)

I'd say a month is too short a time tbh. If your going to do it (Which I really think you should) then give youself time to see the great sites of the world. It would be pointless and somewhat stressfull to rush around the world in a month.

im thinking of the same thing, looking @ maybe seeing:
  • Pyramids
  • The Great Temple of Abu Simbel
  • Inca City of Machu Picchu
  • The Northern Lights

Looking @ more Egyptian temples + Museums etc too.

Was thinking of Canada for the Northern Lights but im no expert unless sum1 can offer advice :). Also sumwhere for snowboarding too as im looking @ learning that some time very soon.

Oh and some American places too, was thinking Grand Canyon + a few other places but unsure of where lol, more research needed me-thinks.

Also, what kinda money am i looking @ needing? Just unsure how much ill be roughly needing, including spending money :)

As someone else said I don't think you can call it a RTW tour if it's only a month long. I'm currently planning my RTW and it's 7months long, even then it's hardly the world as I don't plan on putting a foot down in North America.

If you have 1month and you’re going to Chile and Aus then I would probably base it around those two locations or you will spend all your time travelling and none of it actually seeing the world your passing.

Maybe travel up the east coast of Aus, Sydney to Cairns stopping a few times on the way at places like Byron Bay and Brisbane for a few days. Depends where in Aus the relatives are.

Good site for some ideas www.gapyear.com

Wahaaaaaay 1 month aint enough - as said above atleast 2 weeks each.

Hehe im off to NZ end of this year

Boo yaa!

How long are you planning on going for?

To go to Egypt, Peru, Canada and Grand Canyon I would guess the air ticket would cost about £800, travel insurance £100 and it should take about 2-3months to do those places to any degree of decency.

Overall budget probably in the region of £3,500 but that could be down to £2,500 if your very careful or £5,000 if your staying in nice hotels etc. If you’re going to Peru it would be rude not to go into the Amazon for a while.

thinking around the 3-6 months in @ least decent hotels :P

dont just mean grand canyon though, i mean maybe sum cities too and if im heading to canada i read in another thread niagra falls is just over the border from 1 of the cities so...

like i say, need more thought on it, where i wanna head to exactly etc

Sounds like you have the basics of a good trip there, budget really depends more on where you stay/how you travel and how much time you spend in the more expensive locations.

Maybe look at other locations around Egypt and travel around a bit of Africa, Cape Town for example is suppose to be brilliant and fairly cheap to live like a king. America and Canada will always be fairly expensive but easier to budget for due to more information.

For a few ideas check out www.gapyear.com I've found loads of useful things on there from ideas of places/sights to see to costs and information on visas etc.

Yeah 1 month probably is too short! It didnt start as a RTW trip, i was just going to see my family in Aus and my uncle suggested I go to Chile as well because it doesnt cost much more.

I then started to look at other nice places to visit! I could either just go Aus and Chile, maybe somewhere else for a few days or wait until I've finished at uni and do it properly.

Cheers for advice anyhow.

I'm off to Alaska this year to see the Northern Lights =)
I'm not an expert on the issue but I have done a lot of research on the lights.

I basically didn't wanna fly half way across the world without assurances.

Check out the following link :

If you want the highest possible chance of seeing the lights, I recommend basing your holiday in a town directly underneath the centre band of the aurora. I'm going to a cabin called Bettles Lodge just north of Fairbanks Alaska in November =), it lies directly underneath and boasts a 95% chance of viewing if you stay for 3 nights

Also try and go between September - March =)

The only thing I'm worried about which unfortunately is out of my control is the weather, you could be extremely unlucky and have a cloudy week and not see anything *crosses fingers*

Good Luck xD
