Looking for an app which allows the user to create their own custom routes.

Any recommendations?

Google maps isn't good enough. As it will automatically find the most efficient route for you

I use Navmii, doesn’t use data (unlike Google Maps) very efficient at routing multi drops around London for me. :)

You can amend it however you please, add destinations etc. I'm not sure what you're after otherwise  You want to create the route from scratch?

I'm presuming this is just to plan a route, not to use as a satnav?

Via Michelin?

Has various route types rather than just shortest/fastest/most efficient, and you can add as many stops as you please along the way. It will even recommend routes that have interesting places en route.

Google maps. Put in your start and end points and anything in between then drag the route around.

I received a copy of a route. Which is basically a series

I want to be able to set two points. A to B via a specified route. Without the need for checkpoints.

Checkpoints are just a way of defining points on the route between A and B.

I don't understand how you think you can manually create a route between A and B, without effectively specifying some form of checkpoint along the way? It's pretty fundamental to you being able to define the route you want to use.

Enter start and end points then insert as many waypoints as you want to give you the route you want.

You can even just drag the route line to a point you want to go through and it inserts waypoints for you.

You can even download the files for your specific GPS system.

The other one I have just started playing with is My-Route App.

Go to 30s. Isn't that what you want to do?

I'm confused what you're trying to achieve. You have a specified route that you want to put in without actually entering the specified route? Can't you just enter points A and B into Google maps and then drag the route so it follows your specified route?

I'll start again.

I received a custom route. I'm guessing it was created within GMaps.

The problem is that Gmaps phone app doesn't allow me to use the route as expected. I would expect the app to guide me through the route. However it doesn't do this... Instead the app creates its own route to the end desinatiode.

Will watch that vid later.

Maybe next time start with a full explanation of the problem and people will be able to understand what help you need :)

The problem I find with most online route planning software is that no matter what you do, once you import/download the route into a device the devices settings will automatically overwrite the planning software settings, if that makes sense.

Having said that I find that proper GPS devices don't seem to suffer from it so much compared to phone versions.

Last year on a tour of D-Day beaches 10 bikes all had BMW/Garmin motorcycle sat-nav units the odd one out using his phone had no end of trouble even though he was using exactly the same route files as the rest of the group.

This kind of issue has been discussed a lot on some of the motorcycle touring forums/facebook pages I frequent.

This will cost you £15 a year (currently) for the TomTom app but it is worth it. What you need is the following:

  • Get .gpx file version of your route
    • Can create your own using something like: http://www.gpxeditor.co.uk/
    • TomTom have their own route building software but I prefer Google Maps based editors
  • Get the TomTom App for your phone
  • Setup your online account with TomTom
  • Go to https://mydrive.tomtom.com/en_gb
  • Click the route button in the toolbar on the left
  • Import your GPX file
  • Save the route and be sure to click sync with my devices
  • Open up the TomTom app on your phone
  • Go to 'My Routes' in the app
  • Your saved route (or track as TomTom) call it will be available
I've skipped some steps in the above but that should be enough to get you started. This is by far the best way I have found to be able to create custom routes and then follow them on a bike. I use this on my motorbike and push bike and it works like a charm. The TomTom software will also try and get you back onto your route if you deviate from it.
