Hi All

I have the wonderful task of fault finding Granny's broadband connection. Currently the ADSL light is on, yet the router can't serve web pages. I've tried another computer, so I don't think it's a computer software issue. So, can you hit me with possible reasons why web pages can't be served even though the ADSL light is on. (Oh, and obviously I will be speaking with their tech support but it's better if you give me some reasons so it sounds like I know what I'm talking about ...)

Thanks

The router have a diagnostics page on its web interface? If so try that. Also who is it with? if you know very little, its probably best if you speak to the technical support team. They'll be able to give you step by step directions. If they dont work they'll probably just replace the router.

Other things to check is that the computer is getting assigned an IP address and DNS server. Also if there are problems on the actiual telephone line, try another microfilter.

It's with Metronet.co.uk (since taken over by Plus.net). The router is a two to three year old Netgear DG834GT. The modem status is showing as connected, and that's why I'm a bit stumped as to what's going on. They did up the line speed (now showing connected at 7,008kbps) and I'm wondering if for some reason the router can't cope with the new speed (even though it's showing as connected).

Thanks, I will try another microfilter and router.

"Other things to check is that the computer is getting assigned an IP address and DNS server." How do I check this?

Thanks :p

The router should cope fine. I preseume you've tried a proper factory reset of the router? Also try another microfilter.

On the bottom corner, where it shows the wireless connection. Right click and check on status. Then view details and you should be able to see there. Or I believe that's how you check on XP. On Vista you go to the network connection center, then view status and then details.

The router should show the status of the PPP session as well as ADSL sync. It's quite possible to have the latter without the former and thus have no internet connection although the router's never "serving web pages"...

Yep. The router is definitely connected to the telephone exchange but that doesn't necessarily mean that it's authenticated with the ISP. Can you post the other details from the modem status page?

ADSL led just shows it detects the lines adsl enabled and could connect.

Is there an internet led thats also green showing the device has logged in correctly (i dont have that router model) or is it not lit or some color other than green?

To work the router needs the correct login details and to have swapped informaton with the ISP's network on the servers to use for looking up web pages.

You also need the pc to connect properly to the router.

You need to login to the routers configuration webpage which is usually accessed by typing a number such as 192.168.1.1 into a web browser. The exact number depends on the router model and how the isp has configured it.

So far you have not confirmed you can access the routers configuration only that you can see the extenal lights.

At a guess i would think the easierst option will be to re-run whatever setup isntructions the ISp issued possibly after esetting the router to factory defaults by pressing and holding i the reset button (may need a pin) until lights go off and its resets.

It could be of course thers a temporary ISP fault, just waiting and restarting router and PC may help.

The settings page from the router is below. One question, on this screen the Network Type is shown as PPPoE, yet on another screen I have an Encapsulation dropdown which is set as PPPoA (PPP over ATM). Is this consistent? (I think it's ok but want to check). I have been advised by the ISP Metronet.co.uk that the connection should be PPPoA.

As you can see the router settings screen is showing Status as Connected.

My own view is that somewhere the account is failing an authentication thereby preventing surfing. Is there anything in the router screens that could show this? I will post other router screens shortly.

Sorry, I'm not quite sure what you're referring to, there is a clickable Router Status link in the Maintenance menu of the first screen print, but the router is at another house and I can't currently check. I have the feeling it didn't show anything otherwise I would have taken a screen print when I was last there trying to fault find.

Thanks
