I've currently got a router in my network that handles all the ips, firewall, port forwarding, etc - If I bought another router (like Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 wireless, with or without dd-wrt), would I be able to set it up so it can act as an access point? I just want to add a wireless point to my network so I can access it with my laptop.

It doesn't take much setting up - disable DHCP on one or both routers and connect your new router to the old router by their switch ports, making sure that their IPs don't conflict and they're within the same subnet. Job done.
