Router for Plusnet FTTC?

I use a Draytek 2860n on Plusnet VDSL2. 2860n has been fine, but it's important to have the latest firmware, then choose the DSL modem code that suits your exchange. If I choose the wrong modem code then the Draytek suffers a speed drop.

Ditto, I'm not on Plusnet, but have used my 8800NL on BT Infinity, Sky Fibre Pro and now Zen ADSL Unlimited

And it has been rock solid! I have been very impressed by it. I haven't used it for anything complex though, I would definitely consider buying a Billion router again if I needed anything better.

Only thing i would say is if you want to do anything advanced be prepared to have to SSH in and use vyatta command line commands. It has an amazing basic setup wizzard but VPN or anything like vlans you have to get your hands dirty. :) Also remember you will need a gigabit switch as it only has 3 Ports. I also don't recommend bridging 2 of them as it slows it down.

Yes, don't bridge if possible - hardware offload doesn't work on bridged ports. But the config file is pretty easy to read if you have any networking experience, similar to Junos. Also the Ubiquiti community forums are busy and full of knowledgeable people and solutions to problems - and a lot of the old Vyatta tutorials on the web still work OK on the EdgeRouter. The more I use the EdgeRouter(I stay away from the GUI and find the command line much easier), the more I like it.

We're using the one before latest. Newest has a couple of crippling bugs we've found.
 
Thread revive as I think my Plusnet provided Technicolor TG582n FTTC router is on its last legs. It keeps randomly rebooting, and when it is up it struggles to load pages or sometimes just gives up entirely. This is happening on multiple wired PCs and on laptops and phones connected wirelessly, so it's not a problem with a specific device.

What's the cheapest, decent replacement FTTC router I can get? What do I need from Plusnet to be able to use a 3rd part router?
 
I am using the openreach modem (fudged router) with a Asus RT-AC56U on Merlin's firmware (it worked on standard firmware too) with Plusnet as my ISP (80/20).

Settings you need:

Wan connection: PPPoE
Username:
Password:
(these were what you provided when you signed up)

And that's pretty much it.

I've turned off logging and enabled QoS and some other settings. Tempted to get one of the more beastly Asus routers that work with Merlins to see how fast I can get the Wifi to go.
 
I am using the Openreach modem yes. I seem to remember there was some certain protocol or something that was needed to be able to support a FTTC connection?

Where would I find my username and password for the internet connection? My router came pre configured years ago so unless it's stored somewhere I have no idea where it is :p

So any other suggestions other than the Asus one above? There are a load of TP Link ones when I search. I'm not after anything flashy or fancy, or even GB as I have a GB LAN throughout the house already. This is just for internet and to allow me to control a few specifically assigned IPs and some firewall rules.

plusnet user here...using the openreach modem but bought the TP-LINK N600 router. Made a massive difference to wireless through the house and is also gigabit lan.
 
just wondering why you guys would go for someone like plusnet who have traffic shaping on their service rather than uno (xilo) ? I'm looking to get fibre but can't decide who to go with!
 
Because as far as I'm aware their 'traffic shaping' is basically transparent to the end user. I've certainly never noticed it.

They don't rate limit. They do prioritise some types of traffic over others, so for example VoIP gets a higher priority than Usenet. And this only happens if their network gets overloaded.

They're completely upfront about it here.
 
Ah ok I kind of mean that from my little research it seems uno offer quite a good package that has no limitations and no lengthy tie in periods.. i only found them as I was looking at zen but they seemed to costly for my needs but I'd had good experiences in the past.

I'm worried about tying into a big provider like plusnet and it being crap basically!
