I went through a similar experience with two crap featureless Sr102 "vintage" routers....
Dropped wifi now and then but poor adsl speeds slowing down to under 2mbps when 14-16mbps was the norm + ridiculous ping.
Annoyingly it always seemed to effect me at a particular times late in evenings when I sometimes was online gaming, but speeds could drop during day for no reason.
The range is appalling as well, although Im home plugged on my gaming pc Ive had to use wireless repeaters to get the lame 2.4ghz to the top floor of our 4 story house (router on 2nd)...
Anyway I did a bit of research and the Asus routers seemed a good alternative to the not fit for purpose sky units, As neodude has said above the ASUS RT-AC66U with the Merlin firmware is very popular with fibre users.
As Im adsl I went for the older Asus Dsl N55U D1 which probably has a very similar Asus interface to the ASUS RT-AC66U and Ive never looked back, no drops, no speed or ping issues and its dual band with loads of options and features which are easy to set up and no more wireless repeaters, reaches all 4 floors with ease! (both 2.4 & 5.0ghz)
hth.
Just to add, you will need to extract your user info from your sky unit, there are programs and guides out there to do it easily, just do a quick search.
