So I have sky fibre and there sr102 router is a sack of crap, wireless range sucks and it's not dual band however I'm useless with routers and networks in general, I'm told I can't just plug another in and away I go, I have lots of wireless devices in use so I think a better router would help with speed and bandwidth control. Can any one offer any suggestions ??

Other people will probably be along to recommend models, but personally I've used an ASUS RT-AC66U with Merlin firmware for years with Sky fibre, no issues.

I went through a similar experience with two crap featureless Sr102 "vintage" routers....
Dropped wifi now and then but poor adsl speeds slowing down to under 2mbps when 14-16mbps was the norm + ridiculous ping.
Annoyingly it always seemed to effect me at a particular times late in evenings when I sometimes was online gaming, but speeds could drop during day for no reason.
The range is appalling as well, although Im home plugged on my gaming pc Ive had to use wireless repeaters to get the lame 2.4ghz to the top floor of our 4 story house (router on 2nd)...

Anyway I did a bit of research and the Asus routers seemed a good alternative to the not fit for purpose sky units, As neodude has said above the ASUS RT-AC66U with the Merlin firmware is very popular with fibre users.

As Im adsl I went for the older Asus Dsl N55U D1 which probably has a very similar Asus interface to the ASUS RT-AC66U and Ive never looked back, no drops, no speed or ping issues and its dual band with loads of options and features which are easy to set up and no more wireless repeaters, reaches all 4 floors with ease! (both 2.4 & 5.0ghz)

hth.

Just to add, you will need to extract your user info from your sky unit, there are programs and guides out there to do it easily, just do a quick search.

Just to say that currently the SR102 is giving me the best connection, speed wise ,on my very long/poor line
i am getting 4meg down with this and is a solid connection
Whearas my other routers a billion 7800dxl and a asus n55u are giving quite a bit lower and keep dropping connection

Weird really as they are a lot `better`than the sky supplied one
