hi

i plugged in my Linksys router before and it works fine but will not allow me to login to use the internet.

Every student in the hall gets a log in to use the internet, so do i need to forward ports or.... if so how do i know which ones?

many thanks

Most of the time the ToCs of the Uni network state that using additional networking hardware is strictly prohibited...does it mention anything like that in your uni agreement?

/edit This is if you are in halls?

Yes am in halls but i have just read another thread were they were talking about auto Ip and clone your MAC address to router....

either way they seemed to get round it but it doesnt quiet say how he did it

=s

Did you register the MAC of your computer's network card with the university? if so, clone it with from within your router's webinterface so the school thinks your router IS your PC. There is no way they can tell you have a router connected.

Got it working =) there is a tab on my linksys that clones ya MAC address and after doing that it worked a charm.

i didnt register my MAC though, the network must just think its my PC as u sed.

Thanks ppl.

They probably use a variant of Switchport Security that you find on Cisco switches and other managed gear that registers the first MAC address connected to the switch interface and won't permit traffic on that interface from any other mac until it's reset either manually or by time period.
Similar to what Cable ISPs often do, hence why most cable routers have the mac clone option built in.
