I upgrading some months ago to fibre broadband (upto 36mb Talktalk) as it was free. I have been looking about at routers and see posts/topics on various sites recommending all these fancy routers/modems. I guess my question is does it make a difference?

I was supplied with the DSL-3780 when I upgraded along with bt openreach box, and I mainly download movies music and game. Just after some thoughts/opinions really. Currently use PIA VPN aswell as torrents get throttled and I wanted some protection.

The free routers given are generally a lower wireless speed than some of the ones you can buy.

They also tend to have less features.

It all comes down to what you are connecting really.

In terms of the actually speed (wired) you will receive in total there probably isn't much difference from the standard router you receive to one you buy. However a good aftermarket one will offer you potentially better wireless range and speed for wireless devices attached to it.

Some aftermarket ones also allow you to connect other devices to it, such as a network printer or storage.

Basically its lacking, doesn't offer the latest wireless standards and is limited to 802.11n instead of the newer higher speed 802.11ac.

It isn't dual band, doesn't offer 1gb Ethernet ports and no usb3.

That been said it is free, depends on how much you want to spend really.

say if I had around £80 to spend, would that buy one substantially better? I mainly use a combination of homeplugs and wireless to phones and xbox etc
