I know this has probably been asked many times before, but I cannot find a definitve answer. I want to know which are the best routers to get?
I currently have a linksys WAG54G which is a pain in the arse it needs restarting every 10 mins. so I need a new one basically
I play lots of online games, and hope to use it for lan partys so a awsome wireless speed is necessary aswell...
I'm a bit confused over what to get, mimo, adsl2, speedbooster, etc. I have no clue on what they mean, I have a broadband ADSL conection thru aol, I know what is said about aol so please keep it out of the thread :p
Also can a list of good high priced, mid priced, and low priced routers be drawn up and put into a sticky beacuse it would keep threads like this away I am aware of manfactures links being in the sticky but a goo dbit of jargon busting wouldn't go a miss

I used to have exactly the same model router which i got fed up of having to restart everytime it got a bit hot, ended up having a fan on it constantly to prolong the duration between reboots.

Anyway, i moved to a Belkin one, can't remember the model but its been fine since i swapped to it.
 
I know a Netgear DG834G works ok with AOL, you can get the DG834 if you don't need wireless.

I think you might have to change the MTU size, but I'm not sure on the specifics.

I live in an old house with thick walls BTW so a strong signal is needed
 
The MTU setting for AOL is 1450 this you need to set in the router connection settings.

ADSL 2 is a different faster standard than ADSL,

ADSL = upto 8Mb
ADSL2 = upto 12Mb
ADSL2+ = upto 24Mb

Mimo(multiple Input Multiple Output) is a wireless technilogy that uses multiple ariels on the router to give a better and stronger wireless range.

Speedbooster is probably where the router maker is using dual channel wireless to deliver faster than 54Mbps connections. Normally will need to get a matching wireless adapter for each machine from the same makers to use the increased speeds as it is not a official wireless standard like B or G.

Rangemax next is Netgear martketing speak to there Mimo and Draft N wirless products.

How many machines are you wanting to connect to the internet ?

ADSL modems are backward compatible so if you have a router/modem that is ADSL2+ ready which virtually all of them should be now then it will work with ADSL1 and ADSL2 as well as ADSL 2+
 
I'm hoping around 4 at a lan party , I'm hoping wireless is good enuf so we can all game wirelessly with good pings, I know that depends on the ISP aswell
 


thats what I'm currently getting with aol gold, and yes I do wish to switch but I've got to pursuade my mum. my friend has orange broadband which seems to be good, and you get a free router, I was on aol gold but that service seems to have disappeared, and its now silver or platinum :S
my requirements are unlimited d/u loads, really fast speeds, good for lan partys, need good pings, less than 20 pounds a month

You are not asking for much are you LOL ;)

The days of truly unlimited downloads are pretty much over, the nearest you will get is Virgin Media (NTL/Telewest) or Be but depends if they are available in your area. Otherwise Look at some of the Enta resellers as they seem to have a good reputation for speedd and have a large download allowance which is split between Peak and Off peak usage.
