Router to get rid of BT hub

Hi

I have a BT box and a plusnet router at the moment. The Plusnet router is on its last legs and is generally not good enough for my current needs.

Can anyone recommend me a router to replace both the BT box and plusnet box? Looking to pay about £40. I like the current features of my plusnet box, i.e. being able to limit times wireless devices can connect.

What BT box do you have? Although probably not the connoisseurs choice, i'm really happy with the new BT smart hub, bit over budget though at £59.
 
The BT box is just connects to the phone socket to allow the use of the plusnet router.
I have read that I can get a router that does what the BT box does and a router all in one. At least that what I think i read.
 
I think the cheapest VDSL router is the Billion BiPAC 8800NL at ~£65.

I'm making the assumption that you have a FTTC fibre connection. And a BT Openreach modem on the wall.

I have an openreach hub connected to the phone socket on the wall (the phone socket is one of the big ones that connects to the normal phone socket. It has two wires in it). The plusnet box then connectes to the BT hub thing.
 
The Openreach hub is a VDSL modem. It's there because the Plusnet router you have only supports ADSL. Having the separate modem was the standard solution when VDSL was released.

You don't get VDSL capable wireless routers for £40.

Your best first step is to contact Plusnet and see if they'll do you a deal on their current router which is a single box solution.

If you can live with having two boxes you could get a better router to plug into it. Even if you went down that route £40 doesn't get you much.

@Siliconslave: if you don't keep the Plusnet supplied router you could cause yourself unnecessary hassle if you ever have a fault in the future.
 
I myself use TP-LINK TD-W9980. I got my mother the next version down TD-W9970. Does the job in a small flat. I think they can be picked up for £60 and £40.
 
Netgear D6400 can be had just shy of £90. That would be my choice at current on a low budget VDSL compat router.
Can't link to it, but the most obvious place you imagine has it and can probably be found cheaper if you dig around :)

I'm leaving plusnet for vodafone shortly so will have a 6month old plusnet router that'll be gathering dust :) As i say they may well want it back.
 
I decided to go back into contract with plusnet and get a free Plusnet VDSL router. Free being £6.99 for the post, but at reduced price on my BB.
Back into a 24 month contract.
Plusnet have been good to me so far, so meh.
