Hi all,

I'm looking for a piece of software that I can use to see what devices on my network are using the most data, I just need a simple way to see how much bandwidth each device is using, I don't need to see what specific data or anything like that.

I'm living in a student house and we've got 60mb/s fibre optic with VM, I know that there is no issue with the service but constantly the internet is unusable due to people showing no regard for others and maxing the downloads, we've had something like 300GB downloaded in 4/5 days according to the router and it's driving me up the wall!

Any help would be appreciated! I've tried out several pieces of software but no idea what half of them even do!

What kind of switch are you using? Even a cheap old Netgear FS726T will give you counters for each port and also allow you to limit bandwidth on each individual port, allowing you to force people to using only the share of bandwidth they've paid for.

You could also investigate QoS.

When I was a student, we built an old machine, for torrents, p2p etc... that would only download over night. You submitted your job, waited 24 hours and then you had the files (ideally).

If you're after super low pings in a shared house I'd forget about it, or buy your own line.

I don't have the time, or especially the money to do that, I just need something to monitor the data usage of each connection..

Besides everyone just agreeing to stop, it's the only viable solution. doesn't have to be a quick machine
