Hi All,
New here, I recently ran a cable from my Master BT point to the bedroom, I connected up a modem/router and turned it on but the DSL and internet connectivity light didn't come on.

Can I run a router off a slave point or can it only work from the master bt?

Regards,
Sam

Yes It should work if you've wired it correctly, you'll get degraded speeds and you'd be better off having the extension on the lan side in terms of sync speed.

Have you checked the socket works with a phone? Filtered faceplate or dsl filter installed?

I used 2 pair 4 core, should I have used normal cat5 with the 4 pairs? I just have a slave socket with a dsl filter plugged in.

You only need a single pair connected. You'd usually use Cat5e or CW1308. What have you used?

I just used some 2 pair 4 core that I bought from screwfix. I connected the blue pair in to 2 & 5, and tried it with just that and also tried it with the blue and the orange connected.

I'll upload a photo of the master socket tomorrow. The master socket has a full 4 pair connected into it.

You only need a single pair connected. Anything else will potentially make things worse.

The extension wiring needs to be connected to the unfiltered side of the master socket (assuming it's filtered).

What did you buy from Screwfix? It must have a catalogue number.

That cable doesn't appear to be twisted pair. Fine for voice, near useless for data.

If it isn't marked/sold as CW1308 (Cat3) or better don't use it.

Even with junk cable you should get some sort of connection. If you aren't getting anything there could be something else going on.

Hmm, the roll i picked up was twisted, but think it is purely telephone cable. Do you think it will be worth replacing it with some cat5?

Post of photo of your wiring showing how it's connected.

I took my wires out before I took the photo but I only used to blue pair and wired it, blue -2 blue/white - 5.
