hi i need a router that can tell me which pc on the network is using how much data and a rough idea where the data is going, reason is there's someone who over the past 4 months has used 10 terrabyte of data downloads.

anyone recommend one i just need a breakdown of say 4 hard wired pc's and a few remote connections data useage per connected device and where the data is being downloaded from.

its at home btw so no legal action will be take just a right good WTF ! and i can point the finger at whos doing it.

Thanks

I can't help with a consumer router suggestion but I can suggest something that you might be able to knock up temporarily if you have spare kit.

pfSense and in particular the ntopng plugin can show you real time and historical stats on which IP is talking to what on the outside world and how much bandwidth it's used etc. An old PC with two NICs and pfSense sat between your existing router and the rest of the network would do what you want. Double NAT is less than ideal but you could just do it temporarily to find the culprit.

Here's an screenshot from ntopng which I think gives you the info you want?

However I'm also pretty sure that some people with better knowledge will be able to tell you how this might be achieved just using Linux and some utilities running on your PC in a VM or something. I don't know much about it but perhaps something like Wireshark might be an option.

The ASUS routers have a traffic monitor thing that does this. It breaks down all bandwidth to PC's then by sites/technology so you can see what they used that used x GB's of data.

thanks allot guys for your time , i ended up going the router route in the end as i still use the supplied netgear router i got with the package which is 5 years old now, i'm suprised what info you can get out of them , i usually never check useage but was suprised at the amount over 10tb in 5-6 months and i heard rumours of a fair useage policy they can sometimes get you on.

thanks
