I saw one of these for sale down my road, with 88,000 miles on the clock, and in reasonable nick for £500...

any good? :o

They go cheap as chips, i picked up a 416 with 78k on the clock in mint condition (body wise) for £650.

I did have to have the head gasket replaced 2 weeks later but i have done 3k miles now with no problems.

Its a good A-B run about.

My 414 was the most reliable car I ever had, hardly anything went wrong in 2 years, just ran a little bad when it was very damp which I cured with dampstart. :)

Actually if the 1.4 is a k-series you will have to have the head gasket done soon no doubt. 88k miles on the factory one is amazing! :D

I havnt seen the geeza who owns the car yet :p I was wanting to buy it as my first car, bu im really unsure about this one.

414's are probably the most grandaddy of them all, but with a set of alloys and the GSi boot spoiler they can look very smart

I've had 2 214's and they were nothing but excellent. Apart from the consumables, the only parts I had to replace in the years of owning were a £15 temperature sensor and a gearbox which I broke.

I lost a lot when it came to sell it, but it was basically a free upgrade to my 220.

What model is it?

If it's the boxy version (89-96) then it's just a mark 2 200 with a boot

If it's the newer version (95-00) then it's a Honda Civic underneath and available as both a hatchback and saloon

yeah its good power for the capacity, and of course, cheap tax :)

I think its a great first car, but there is the headgasket issue to watch out for.

Nothing like a Honda Civic.

You are joking right? The 1995-2000 Rover 400 and the 1995-2001 Honda Civic 5 door are virtually identical - the bodyshell is the same, etc?

For £500 a 95-00 shape 400 makes reasonable sense if its in good nick.

Doh, I read it as 214, oops

Woooo buy it, join the R400 first car club! Its a good motor to be honest. Ill forget to mention that i shredded the gearbox fairly early on but got that sorted quickly and cheaply which is always good. I think they are a nice car to drive, i cant see anything wrong with them. Though i think i should get some cheap alloys but have no money atm.

a lot of my friends do get quiet surprised by the fact it does go quiet well, but i learnt quickly that you have to slow down for corners quiet conciderably as the ride is very...wobbely. It takes speed bumps well in its stride though!

The 400/45 hatchback (and the Civic) was actually based on a FUGLY old Honda design called the Domani.
