Ok guys, I'm going to sound like an idiot but I don't want to mess anything up.

I got given a 1994 Rover 416Sli (much to my amaze it didnt have dual graphics cards :p) and the oil was fairly low when I got it. Now the oil light has started to come on so I figure I better top it up.

Here's the question: There seems to be a selection of different oil on offer, what do I need? Obviously its an old engine so I like to treat it nicely and do what I can to prolong its life.

Its got 68k on the clock, 3 of those I have put on there.

Full service history, 1 previous owner. Serviced every year.

The light doesnt stay on all the time, just comes on when I turn the engine over for about 10-15 seconds.

if you don't want to pay a dealer to do the oil change, go to halfords and look at thir oil selection, there is a booklet there that wil guide you onto which oil to use (semi synthetic etc - what's your mileage p/a) it's a rover and (without sounding harsh) isn't going to have much in the way of re-sale value so you need to make a decision on wether to keep up the service schedule or just do the bare miniumum oil changes. i don't know wether your engine is a belt or chain, but i would advise looking at when the belt was changed, if it is a belt...

any brand name 10w40 semi-synth will do the job.

its normal for the oil light to be on while cranking and for a couple of seconds after start up.
