ROYAL Mail bosses have banned the Union Flag from Scots sorting offices ahead of the royal wedding.

Post office bosses don't want the British flag displayed because they fear it might cause trouble over its link to Rangers.

The news came as William and Kate continued their wedding preparations with a rehearsal at Westminster Abbey last night.

Old Firm rivalry and sectarianism have been in the headlines since the bad-tempered Glasgow derby last month and the subsequent letter-bomb campaign against Hoops boss Neil Lennon and other high-profile Celtic fans.

On Tuesday, bosses ordered staff at Glasgow's Springburn mail centre to remove Union Flag bunting they had put up to celebrate the wedding.

A spokeswoman said: "We do not wish to dampen festivities.

"But, in light of recent sensitivities, we cannot agree to any material that can be construed as having partisan connections.

"We're happy for staff to display memorabilia of the royal couple.

"We don't want anything that's just Union Jacks - anything that can be misconstrued."

But a mail centre insider said: "This is madness. There are going to be thousands of families across Scotland waving Union Jacks on Friday, eating from Union Jack paper plates and so on.

"Some may be Rangers fans but I'm guessing that's a minority.

"Royal Mail seem to be saying the Union Jack is bigoted."

So waving the flag of your own country is now deemed partisan in this country.

This follows McVities in Glasgow banning the Union Flag in their canteen to celebrate the wedding because it offended a member of staff. McVities have since backed down. I wonder if the Royal Mail even notice that they have ROYAL in their name.

I'm disgusted by this.

More politically correct nonsense.

displaying the British flag in Britain is not bigotted. Someone at Royal Mail needs to sort their head out.

It's a shame, but unfortunately it isn't nonsense. A poor indictment of some Glaswegians.

This.

The ban is purely in Scotland, and is sadly a reflection of the trouble caused up here by anything which can be linked to one side of the Old Firm. The Union Flag is strongly linked to Rangers and as such I can see why they think they need to do this.

Perhaps because Rangers are proud of their Britishness?? I would hope then in light of this if its becuse the Union Flag is strongly linked to Rangers that Tri-colour flag which is strongly linked with Celtic will be banned in Scotland on St Patricks day. I mean really where does all this end?

So is it banned from all RM offices in Scotland or is it just banned at their Glasgow offices?
Need to hear more, to make full judgement.

Still... Given the failed abortions that make up most of the Old Firm fans, taking the flag down to stop them from getting wound up is probably a small price to pay.
Shame we can't just round up the worst of them and have them drowned.

But they haven't actually said that though... This is just some guy putting words into a story for the news to vomit up a headline.

LOL, Rangers fans proud of their Britishness, have you ever heard anything so ridiculous in your life.

Unfortunately in Scotland the union flag is a symbol of bigotry as is the Irish flag thanks to the morons who have destroyed them for their own sectarian gain.

I was at the old firm game on Sunday, every Rangers seat had a union flag attached to each seat for their supporters to wave (i guess the royal wedding gave them a good excuse), and the Celtic end was full of irish flags being waved. Neither of these flags have anything to do with Scottish football and should be banned at grounds.

Its understandable that the flag is banned in places like sorting offices as it would cause problems up here, thats a sad fact, but also an indication of the kind of morons that follow the old firm that blight not only Scottish football, but Scotland in general.

Well said.

It doesn't, when you have businesses as large as Asda changing corporate colours from Green to Blue depending on which area of the city its it, then its never going to end. Its shameful and embarrassing but we will never be rid of it. :(

I agree with that. Being a Rangers fan myself I think there is still a problem with some of the support the same as at any football club in the world.

Did you hear the Monkey chants from last nights barca/real game or see the bottles being thrown?

Do you hear the songs being sung by some scottish clubs support mocking the dead from the Ibrox disaster?

Chants of a vile nature are present in most if not all football its just up here the sectarian card is being played the most these days in the media.

Its not just in the media, i had the unfortunate position of getting on a bus back to Paisley after the old firm game full of Rangers supporters, I never heard anything sectarian at the game but the bus was rocking with anti irish, anti catholic and anti pope songs, wee guys singing about ulster when they probably couldnt even spell it.

The clubs have done well to cut it down at games but done nothing about the wider problem, they perpetuate it as it makes them money.

Interested in hearing how do you see the club being able to deal with a situation like you just stated?
